New SSX takes series "back to its roots"

Peter Moore teases "obscure new title".

The next game in snowboarding series SSX takes it "back to its roots", sources claim.

It features controls similar to those found in Skate, Kotaku reports.

That means the right thumb stick will be used to perform tricks.

It comes as no surprise to learn, then, that the game is being created by many of the developers responsible for Skate at EA Canada.

SSX was rumoured to be set for a reveal at the upcoming Spike Video Game Awards after teaser trailer The Planet, which you can see below, popped up on the internet.

Last month speculation was fuelled by domains registered by EA that suggested a game called SSX: Deadly Descent was in the works.

Surveys leaked online in the summer described an unannounced snowboarding game as "an intense, moment-to-moment battle against the forces created from riding your snowboard over the most spectacular and remote mountains on Earth".

Interestingly, EA Sports president overnight teased "an obscure new title" set to be revealed at the VGAs. His cryptic message directed to the trailer you see below.

In September last year EA Montreal trouser-wearer Alain Tascan admitted there is a lot of love for SSX at the studio, and said a revival may be on the cards - particularly if the market demanded it.

The last game in the series, SSX Blur, disappointed. Tom awarded it 6/10 for Eurogamer.

The thing keeping me away from nearly every EA Sports game at the minute is this over reliance on the right stick. It completely ruined the NHL games.

First of all, NEW SSX WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Rught now thats out of my system...

"That means the right thumb stick will be used to perform tricks. "

Hmmm, im really not sure about that. SSX is meant to be OTT & arcadey where you can pull off loads of tricks at the quick tap of button. Im not sure using the right stick will be able to provide the same, instant response where you can link loads of moves together in seconds.

But still, I remain hopeful they'll pull it off. Mostly im just glad theres a new SSX. & although im not sure about the right stick thing, its a hell of a lot better than it being Kinect or Move controlled - those would definitely ruin it.

There isn't really a mass market for the game but I for one am delighted a new SSX is coming out!
  • menage #5 1 year ago

I really wonder why the hell they had to change the controls with a game which basically will be bought by the fanbase mostly.

I never liked the flicking in Skate, I just want to grind on Tokyo Megaplex

Remake of Tricky would do me just fine. Thank you.

The skateboarding genre is dead... so lets shoehorn our overcomplicated skating engine into an old snowboarding franchise!
  • zoweewowee #8 1 year ago

I've been waiting for a new SSX for so long... and I loved Skate... that's just the perfect news!

  • StolenGlory #10 1 year ago

Going back to it's roots would be Tricky.
  • dpb135 #11 1 year ago

Sod the right stick for tricks, just make it like the old good versions. Also none of this snowboarding to different events to start them crap either, just use an old fashion map like the new NFS game to select events ....... simples!!

Follow-up the spritual, enlightening escapism of SSX3 please - a milestone game
  • geeza2020 #13 1 year ago

^^yuk - SSX isnt about spiritual enlightened escapism, its about doing as many insane tricks/grinds and huge jumps as possible while winning a race down a mountain! SSX Tricky FTW! And its soundtrack is also freaking brilliant, bring back whoever did the tunes for that game please.
  • sonicyoda #14 1 year ago

Yeah, right-stick sounds like a bad idea. The control scheme in SSX was perfect. I liked having all the trick combinations scattered across the pad. It made it feel even more glorious when you started to get good at it.
  • Jonathan_Fakenham #15 1 year ago

Hmm. It will be interesting to see what they bring to the table. A new fully-HD snowboarding experience as fun and wild as the SSX series has been, could turn out to be an awesome new title.

/prepares to strap on boots, wrap up, and grab a 'board (after wiping away dust and residue from years in storage) \o/ The helicopter's the key.

You're the first I've read that caught and relayed those cryptic comments of Moore, 'grats on that EG. :)

It's a statistical fact* that those who prefer SSX Tricky to SSX 3 also prefer the older Burnouts to the more freeform nature of Burnout Paradise. Or, as I like to refer to them, complete mentalists who can't see that the same game they always loved is right there before them, just in a more open world.

I hope by "back to its roots" they mean that it'll play like SSX or Tricky. Over the top, arcade action. I don't want this to be a snowboarding sim in any way.:p
  • geeza2020 #23 1 year ago

I like the way I get loads of negs for making a comment, but nobody bothers to tell my why they disagree, they just do. Good bunch, those EG'ers :-/
  • bodypopper #24 1 year ago

After the dull last game, the dafter and more arcadey the better really. Like Burnout on a board please.
  • joelstinton #25 1 year ago

    @sulphur_man

too right! that game just nailed that feel on the head, and the idealistic view of snowboarding and that sort of culture. To go with it the gameplay was refined to near perfection, the soundtrack was near perfect, The game was pratically perfect.

And then we had the mess that was erm.. the next one. Although i love heavy rock, it just didn't fit SSX. at all. IT was SSX for the new MTV generation. it was a mess.

as long as it has kaori in it, eh?
  • Power_n_Glory #27 1 year ago

Been waiting for this. Still playing SSX On Tour for the PSP.

Hope they don't mess things up for with the right analogue stick. If they're going to change the control scheme, they might as well have gone all out and tried a Kinect version. If they manage to get it spot on they open up the audience. It could be a disaster but it's worth the risk.

Anyway, still happy to see a next gen version.

i really hope this game takes it's inspiration from SSX 3. yes it's a faux pas to like this one over tricky and the original, but you must admit there was a certain slickness, not just in style but in gameplay that made it so great, in many ways it felt more open ended than GTA did for me. i'd definitely like to see more in terms of exploration of the moutain and character customisation, which was a little bland in SSX 3. in terms of online functionality, implementing some kind of autolog system tailored for the game would add tons of replay value, for example a reigonal leaderboard starting with friends, moving up to your city/state, national and worldwide. all in all this game has alot of potential, but i guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Bring Back Raziel and Ubers and Garabaldi and Untracked and Eddie and Mercury City Meltdown and...

    Hnnnnnnnng
  • Sulphur_Man #31 1 year ago

@gnrlstuart and the SSX3 zen crew

Take beautiful SSX3 and stir in the online freedom of Test Drive Unlimited, and maybe some PS3 Home style community environments (only good) and something wonderful could appear...

It would be a waste of HD console power to just push out a 1080p version of Tricky. We want panoramic vistas, epic weather and atmospheric DTS-HD sound.

I have loved this series, firstly on the PS2 and more recently I purchased the XBox original SSX3 which I have been enjoying on my 360. I really feel that the original games on the PS2 simply could not be faulted. SSX3 on the PS2 was the benchmark by which I shall judge all snowboarding games. The control method was uncomplicated excellence which helped the game be one of the smoothest I have played. Be sensible EA, if it aint broke, dont fix it. The XBox original SSX3 didn't translate so well on to the 360. The main reason being the controls; for some reason the "tweak" button is dual purpose on the 360 which means some landings end up as crashes. Also the game loses widescreen display options which were available to the PS2. Whilst I'm certain that these latter problems would not be an issue on an up to date 360 release, the right stick control method rumour scares the hell out of me, with the potential to ruin the release of the first bit of software news to excite me in a long while. Remember Shaun White Snowboarding on the 360? NO, me neither.
