Damage patch for Gran Turismo 5

Cream de chassis.

As of today, you can smash and trash those beautiful cars in Gran Turismo 5 - mechanical damage has been added.

You can do the demolishing alone or you can head online and revel in the destruction of beauty together, according to TheSixthAxis. And when you're online you'll be able to choose whether damage will be light or heavy or not present at all.

The Gran Turismo 5 damage patch is a beefy 150MB. You'll need to grab today's PS3 firmware update at the same time.

Gran Turismo 5, the game that silkily avoided release for so long, finally raced onto shop shelves last month. What did Eurogamer think? "It's a game that heads off in unexpected and exciting directions, makes a few notable improvements, and overflows with love – for cars, for games technology and for its own mad pursuit."

A look at Gran Turismo from its beginning to its current end.

    Ok. let me get this straight. This game was delayed, and delayed again because it wasn't finished.

    The game finally gets a release, and it's not finished.

    Any one else out there confuzzled by this?
  • gjgjg #2 1 year ago

    They just don't work well under pressure do they? Well I will be protesting by not applying the patch :p ...no wait ill miss out on the great MP mode then... anyway 150mb dload and install will mean i wont be playing tonight.

    That's been sorted pretty quick! Makes you wonder why it wasn't on disc on launch!?
  • tossetaz #4 1 year ago

    We sure could use some wikileaks regarding the development of GT5 cause it sure as hell does seem weird that given the lengthy development time this couldn't make it to the disk but is released a few weeks post release.

    Great job on keeping with your promise of updating GT5!
  • natashaspice #5 1 year ago

    Don't mind as long as they keep updating it can only make the game better than it already is
  • Dizzy #6 1 year ago

    Haha.. surely this is *the* patch!
  • sfp_noodle #7 1 year ago

    Hopefully the next patch will add a decent damage model. I know KY loves his cars to be beautiful, but it's a racing game. Cars crash into each other at high speeds and get smashed. They don't escape with just minor scratches and dents. So far support has been excellent with new features added since launch and it's only been a few weeks. I'm sure PD will sort out the remaining problems in due time. Fingers crossed.
  • db3 #8 1 year ago

    Looking at the article it seems the patch is for online damage. Offline damage should already appear when you reach the necessary skill level.

    Certainly crazy that patches are coming thick and fast after 5 years of dev.

    Huh? FW 3.55, released 7 dec 2010L:
    * System security has been improved.
    * Playstation 2 Compatibility.
    * Removed Playstation Home.
    ? Removed PlayStation Home....Too bad I'm at work, anybody got any info on this yet? Cheers.

    I get the distinct feeling that it just wasn't ready, but Sony were like "enough is enough".

    I downloaded an 85mb update for Play TV last night. It took 12 minutes.

    Are some of your on dial-up? Set it downloading, go for a crap and a cup of tea (not at the same time, obviously), come back and play. Seriously.
  • jonbwfc #15 1 year ago

    @kangarootoo

    I've found the performance of PSN in downloading stuff to be very variable. Downloading stuff 'off peak' - like say 9AM - is fine but god help you if you're trying to download something in the evening. Particularly Wednesday evening when the new stuff comes out on PSN. About then, I've had downloaded speeds I wouldn't have been happy with when I had dial-up....

    As for firmware updates, you're much, MUCH better off downloading them from the playstation web site to a USB stick and installing that way.

    I'm not saying its a birthday present. I'm just saying its not the End of Days that some seem to be making it out to be.

    Tnx..I guess? You'll understand that I'm not too worried though, just surprised to read this (got it from Wiki ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation... though as Sony's PS3 homepage only states that '...address security vulnerability in the system software' as a main feature for this FW).
    .
    Added adit as Wiki-page has been corretced and now only states 'System security has been improved.'
    .
    Pfffft HOME....where would we be without it.

  • Power_n_Glory #19 1 year ago

    I don’t understand why this game has taken so long to develop. I thought it was taking so long because they had to model so many cars and add the damage. They’ve only modelled 200 and the damage isn’t anything to write home about from what I’ve heard.
  • SeesThroughAll #20 1 year ago

    So, they're going to finish the game with patches... I'll wait for it to re-released as platinum then.
  • sarcasmoidosis #21 1 year ago

    "Any 360 game that requires a title update is ready to launch in under 5 seconds."

    I think many people are using PS3 wifi (which is pretty unstable) and blaming PSN for slow downloading - at least that's my experience. I'm using wired LAN and FW+game updates and PSN DLC is always fast for me no matter what time.
    Usually it's slower installing the downloads that actually downloading the files.

    Allthought some games (like MAG and GT5 maybe?) use their own update/patch servers which may vary in speeds. FW updates are always fast though.

    I recommend people to start the PS3 web browser and make a speed test there - if the test show slow performance, it's most likely the wifi or internet line that is slow, and not PSN.

  • Psiloc #23 1 year ago

    Both my PS3s wifi and PSN speeds have always been fine, I can download a 2GB file in about 20 minutes. Unless I'm on a different PSN to everybody else, the problem has to be people's internet connections surely?

    "No but my Xbox downloads 2MB updates in a few seconds and my PS3 takes a number of minutes to download 120MB files and these facts are COMPARABLE."
  • orangpelupa #24 1 year ago

    also because xbox if

    XYZ game got 3 Tittle updates, and you have not updated it at all,

    xbox only need to DL the last 1 update.
  • GamesConnoisseur #25 1 year ago

    People confuses with their own home broadband speed and with PSN/XBL download speed.

    Both are not same, but yes if your broadband slow then your PSN/XBL will be affected, but even if you are on the ultimate highest speed broadband package, that WILL all go to waste when you download off PSN at peak time.

    Perhaps that the PRICE of having free PSN service as a standard? What is bloody ruddy irriating is that for PSN plus subs, we still get the same punishment of peak slow PSN downloads?!

    Points are fairly made that X360 patches are done and dusted and game loaded up looooong before you can do same with some PS3 games/updates. Most of time I m fine with the speed on PSN, but occasionally its just so slow that I m off on another console instead whiling away the time!

    @kangarootoo - thats not the point. 85MB at 12 minutes (and lets say 20 minutes for this new GT5 patch at 150MB) is still a farce.

    Well, I downloaded and installed both the GT patch and the system update in less than 5 minutes total this morning.

    I am still finding it hard to see why Eurogamer gave this a 9??????????

    The game is such a let down with no balance or real structure, online is the worst i have seen in a racing game this gen, the graphics for the most part are pretty poor and a big step down from GT5p and the AI is awful awful awful....Sure the driving is AMAZING ...BUT...whats the point when the racing is so bad?

    But 360 updates are limited to ridiculously small files, dice had. Nightmares trying to update bc2 ready for nam and the new maps (try a 1.7gb patch lol, and was done in half hour) . That's why they so quick, but you will just download them slowly over longer periods of time. I'd just be happy u getting updates, black ops users still claim game virtually
    Unplayable at times due to various bugs and glitches, not to mention the already substandard graphics ps3 version lumped with. I'd take perfectionist dev over couldn't give a toss ones like black ops ones everytime

    When I read comment like "is this some kind of sick joke" and "150mb download means I'm not playing tonight", I think people are taking things rather too seriously.

    And I always reserve the right to apply sarcasm as I see fit ;)
  • BBIAJ #32 1 year ago

    I'm pretty sure that the patch file size limit for the Xbox 360 is 8 MB, which still goes an awfully long way to explaining why it is so many times quicker than when patching on the PS3.
  • kirankara #33 1 year ago

    @patau

    thats your choice mate. Get rid of your ps3 if you that bothered by it. Sony have their way of doing things, MS theirs, but u have to download updates one way or the other, they cant just magically shrink a 1.7gb file like in eg of BC2 into 8mb just cause MS say so. Like someone said turn it on before u ready to play and leave it to update, or just get rid and stick to your 360, but then u lose out on ps3 exclusives. its lose/lose either way imo.
    I have both machines, and the thing that puts me off playing a machine more than anything, is the shit 360 controller lol

    i want a ps3 controller on my 360

    @UKHardcore: I'm sorry, what game were you playing again? Because it must be a different one from the one I've been playing to death ...

    @Gromit: the previous patches have been 133MB. I think the main game interface is basically around that size. I don't know what the difference is this time that warrants the extra 17MB, but it could just as well be stuff for the U.S. version of GT Academy that is launching shortly, hard to say.

    Any news on an incoming patch to sort out the terrible screen tear? Grrr
  • lambtron #40 1 year ago

    @Kangaratoo

    It just turns something that is intended to be an enjoyable pastime into a chore. Not all of have much time to play so this kind of thing can mean you just don't bother (and play a different game on a rival console for example).

    Games are supposed to be fun :).
  • weebl #41 1 year ago

    @Arwin & @00:00:01

    I like the game, but I have to admit that the AI is a real mess still. Opponent cars brake within half the distance that you can meaning you cannot stay behind them and have to go for the pass whether you like it or not. They brake in ridiculous places on the track when they should be applying the throttle which also causes frustration.

    There is a point in having realistic AI otherwise we might as well just be playing against the timer (well, half the game is this anyway). It's like the reverse of playing a pool simulator with unrealistically accurate opponent AI. A bit like Hustle Kings.

    Still, whilst there are drift lobbies I'll be happy.
  • layleeloo #42 1 year ago

    @PatAu. Agreed! I too have all machines and updates on PS3 are a joke compared to the couple of seconds every 360 game takes (and wii). Seems waiting is just part of the GT5 heritage. Could always grow an impressive beard? Take up knitting? Personally I do 1000 piece jigsaws in the time PS3 takes to update things

    I sold my copy of GT5 to some muppet at work for £30

    even with the install and updates
    only cost me £31.85 so I can live with a £1.85 loss after playing it for a week
  • kangarootoo #45 1 year ago

    @PatAU

    A 1GB update is a pain, 150mb considerably less so. These things aren't black and white, and complaining about a 1GB update when attacking a much smaller one is as much a strawman as anything :)

    I believe 360 updates can be incremental, hence the small size. PS3 updates appear not to be (so when you update your firmware, it downloads a complete replacement). I don't know why this is, and I agree its not ideal.

    @lambtron

    Oh look, this is starting to look like there is nothing I love more than watching a loading bar that appears to have been frozen in time.

    ALL I am saying is that a 150mb update is a pain, but its only a small pain. Some just people seem intent on wringing every last drop of disatisfaction out of any incident that comes along, and its doing nobody any good, including themselves. So to keep everyone in line, I am of course wading in like the internet police recruit I so often pretend to be, patronising everyone in my wake, just 'cos a 150mb download doesn't bother me that much :) OK?
  • Stop-gap #46 1 year ago

    Oh God ANOTHER one? I just got GT5 yesterday and spent about 2 hours waiting for the machine to update, then the game to install (and install and a few more installs whenever I press on anything at all) and patch. Now I get another firmware and another game patch?
    Between this and the s-l-o-w menus, GT5 is the only racing game I've played which allows you to read a book at the same time.
  • monkeywithnoeyes #47 1 year ago

    when will this game actually be finished?
  • makeamazing #48 1 year ago

    What would people prefer though, i am glad they are supporting it post support, they didnt have time to get some of this in the game, but at least they are not selling it as DLC like some games.

    Seriously i cant see why people are complaining that only after two weeks they have done two good patches.
  • coolbritannia #49 1 year ago

  • Darren #50 1 year ago

    I think DavoTheDiv hit the nail on its head with his post... GT5 was basically released unfinished despite all the delays. Maybe eventually the developers will get around to upgrading the disappointing visuals to make them so the other 80% of the cars and tracks, you know the rubbishy looking PS2 ones, fit in better with what little there is of the new stuff?
  • Psiloc #51 1 year ago

    Jesus fucking Christ, you'd think the world was ending.

  • Kaminari #54 1 year ago

    WiFi sucks, period.

    It's fine for adhoc connections when you don't have any other choice. But for streaming/multimedia purposes (and obviously serious gaming), Ethernet is the ONLY way to go. If you can't for some reason use an Ethernet cable between your home router and your console, try PLC (the HomePlug standard, not some crappy alternative).
  • thesonglessbird #55 1 year ago

    @Kaminari "If you can't for some reason use an Ethernet cable between your home router and your console, try PLC (the HomePlug standard, not some crappy alternative)."

    This. They're a bit pricey (or they were a year ago when I got mine, don't know about now) and require no setup whatsoever. Great speeds too.

    That said, mine went tits up last night. I blame all the extra plugs for christmas lights etc.
  • Arwin #56 1 year ago

    @weebl: the AI gets better as you progress in A-Spec. If you go online, you see the same problems - people brake when it's not necessary all the time. In the case of A-Spec mode, it gives you space to overtake. The AI gets better and better though - I had an Extreme level Cape Ring race at level 21, and had to work pretty hard to keep the AI driving the same car behind me, and took a few tries before I managed to beat the R8. And generally they are impressively good at not hitting me, much better in fact than in Forza 3, where the AI kept taking me out by tapping my rear end in the corners all the time.

    As for the rest, yes the 360 has a far superior patch system. Yes, it's nice that they have made sure that developers roll out small patches to their games. And yes, that has downsides as well - when a game on PS3 has DLC with new content, and wants to make that content visible properly for all players, that's no issue - just give everyone a patch update with all the new content. On the 360 this is currently simply impossible. A good example was the various updates to Paradise City, where on the 360 version if you didn't have the DLC you'd see generic placeholder cars instead of the new cars, etc.

    And finally, yes, GT5 is clearly unfinished and not making the most of what it could be. But you do have to agree that it makes more sense to update the online part after release rather than the single player experience.

    You can bitch all you like about these patches, but GT5 is now just one patch away of leaving Forza's online in the dust, and that patch is probably coming in two weeks.
  • xMG #57 1 year ago

    Sometimes the downloads are fast and sometimes they're slow
  • RustyBullet #58 1 year ago

    @Arwin i think i can honestly say that GT5 Will never have an online community anywhere as good as what Forza has ALLWAYS had. No that is not fanboy talk either.
  • mss99 #59 1 year ago

    Don't understand why people are complaining. Reviews come out and some issues are raised. The devs have obviously heard these gripes and are doing their best to address, much better than some games I could mention which are just broken (FNV, and BLOPs I am looking at you).

    I mean if they keep patching at this rate in a month or so all the reviewer gripes will have been addressed. They should be commended improving an already excellent game. Think once all the missing features are patched in web sites should issue a new review in light of the changes.
  • mkreku #60 1 year ago

    Maybe they are adding stuff like this later because of the pirating? I mean, you need to have a new firmware to get this..
  • solidSnake04 #61 1 year ago

    @natatashaspice

    Well think about people like me who are in Africa and nobody gives a toss about them.
    I have a shitty quarter MB broadband because I dont want to pay $490 for 8MB. Yeah thats right.
    I still wonder how the f I managed to download the Uncharted 2 demo. I cant keep on getting patches like this. If they were 1 MB fine but anything above 100 MB is a right pain in the ass.
  • filmfan2001 #62 1 year ago

    Hmmm... a 150MB patch which gives a generic dent in every car at the same place. I expected more. Especially after seeing the videos they released of the damage that was supposed to be in the game. 100mph crash into a wall and not even a broken headlight!? At least wing mirrors should be falling off if u scrape along the wall. All I noticed was ur car had a slight wobble after a crash then went back to normal, at least there should be steering damage or something. It would make "The Real Driving Simulator" a bit more real.

    Where is the option to change damage in the game anyway? I read u could change it from minor to major. I can't find any option.
  • Raiten #63 1 year ago

    The funny thing about whining about the update speeds betwean 360 and ps3 is, that while 360 with its shredded in to tiny pieces updates are more convenient for users without a single thred of patience, the ps3 normal sized patches are far better for devs than the small 360 patches.
  • SavageEvil #64 1 year ago

    Amazingly some people don't have GT5 and are complaining about the wrong thing, some idiot above me complaining about not seeing visual damage when that was in since day one. The damage in GT Life didn't appear until the higher Spec races, but in arcade mode you could trash your car visually. Moron talk about what you know. It's just simply incredible the amount of crap you have to wade through on here, another fool talking about FM great online, if it's that great why is it you almost never see 1K online at the same time? I've been on FM3 a lot and last time I saw anywhere over 1K people on was earlier this year. You guys gloat too much, why are you in here to begin with? You're jealous that GT5 in less than a month PD patching things that were problems already?

    Sony should have had two ways of patching I agree, for those in the world who have not so stable Internet, I prefer the lump some job as it is, because it takes less than 5 minutes to download and install. Sure 360 has a better patch system, but for what it's worth this is PS3 we're talking about, don't complain about things that was like that since day one. Sony obviously likes their lump some dump of 100+meg patches, you have the option to deal with it or not, simple as that. One day soon Sony might try to setup a system that can download patches in smaller bite sized bits so you can get it on a slower broadband connection.

    Complaints abound sometimes warranted, but a lot of complaints here are just the same old cynics regurgitating the same crap they said when the game launched...not bored yet? Following GT5 news stories must be the highlight of your life yes, you so cynical about the game you chase every news story about it to give everyone your 2 pence, only problem is you have given every one else those same two pence, like anyone wants your prostituted 2 pence. Those who heard it are trying to rid themselves of it, and the other infected one's are spreading your 2 pence as it were their own. Sounds like an STD if you ask me.

    One thing bothers me, what kind of broadband are some of you people on? Complain about a 150MB patch, but you would let you PC sit and download a 500MB file. I know a lot of you don't just have a game console to justify having an internet connection, so seriously what kind double sided talk is that?
  • Lamb #65 1 year ago

    I think Sony are overly worried about piracy on their system considering most of their games are huge. Factor in the loss of multiplayer and these firmware updates are completely unnecessary without actual new services.
