Gran Turismo 5 tops UK chart

COD: Black Ops knocked off perch.

Long-awaited PlayStation 3 exclusive Gran Turismo 5 has topped the UK all-formats chart.

Sony's simulator is the first game to knock Call of Duty: Black Ops off its perch since the shooter's release at the start of the month. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood remains a place below, dipping to third.

FIFA 11 and Just Dance 2 were fourth and fifth.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit was sixth, Wii Party seventh, Art Academy eighth, Wii Sports Resort ninth and Fallout: New Vegas 10th.

Ubisoft's dancing game Michael Jackson: The Experience entered in 32nd place. Disney Epic Mickey failed to enter the top 40, and had to make do with 11th in the Wii-specific chart instead.

The Undead Nightmare bundle of Red Dead Redemption showed up 14th.

As expected. Well done PD, wonder how long they can stay on top and how many units of hardware this will help shift.

Must be the first time in a while a PS3 exclusive had done that? Good, I'm glad to see COD knocked off its perch . . . . *ahem*

EDIT - Damnation, Eurogamer edited their own subtitle and got there just before me :(

    Well done Gran Turismo!

Saying that, i'd love to see the NFS sales pick up. Its probably the best NFS yet and deserves some good sales to back it up...

I love this game OMG the license tests are so annoying yet satisfying, spent like 15 hrs on them trying to get gold, awesome game.

  • Mkwone #13 2 years ago

I'll concur and say it's a great game and deserves it's number one spot, granted it's not perfect but it's a great achievement and i think everyone is relieved it's just out now. Looking forward to seeing it's actual sales figures though.

    Forza, Forza, blah blah blah.

I may be a PlayStation fanboy but I'm not a fan of GT and I don't have the game, but the Forza fanboys are getting boring now.

Had it from shopto last week and unfortunately went on ebay two days later. Great game and I can see where the work went, however I couldnt help but feel i was still playing the PS2 game. Just hadnt advanced at all other than polish. Perhaps my own expectations were too great after waiting all this time.

spent my weekend with GT5 with a Logitech wheel and a 3D TV... It was Awesome. And what more - my wife finally acknowledged 3D as useful and nice thing to have... GT5 does awesome job in utilizing the image depth to improve the driving experience

    Epic Mickey bomba!

As got the GT5 vs Forza 3 debate. I think what people find funny is for 3 years now Forza fans have been told GT5 would blow it out the water by the PD fanboys. Now it has been released we see that is far from the truth!

"As got the GT5 vs Forza 3 debate. I think what people find funny is for 3 years now Forza fans have been told GT5 would blow it out the water by the PD fanboys. Now it has been released we see that is far from the truth!"

I don't find that funny. I find the whole fanboy debate (and I use the word "debate" in the very loosest sense) about this much closer to sad than funny.

I've no doubt GT is a very good game, and I don't doubt that Forza is also a very good game. Neither of them float my boat personally, but that of course doesn't make either of them bad.

In fact, due to me not liking driving simulators, the more GT achieves what it set out to achieve, the less I will like it. It could of course be nonsense for me to slate it based on it doing what it sets out to do very well.... but I'm sure that sort of thinking won't work for many on here.

Clearly there are going to be people who find GT to be everything they hoped for, and equally there will be people who like something else more, and of course there will be plenty of people whose mind was made up already for all sorts of fanboy reasons who certainly aren't going to change their mind on the basis of something so "unimportant" as, I dunno.... playing the game.

A game came out. Some people really like it. Others don't. A noisy minority on either side will try and suggest that these thigns are objective, and they are "right" about the game being good/bad. Others will disagree just as vehemently. Nothing new to see really, though it does seem as if those on the "non-GT-liking" side of the fence are shouting louder this time than usual. One can only suppose on why that might be...

I'm a fan of racers in general and I have space for both GT and Forza on my shelf.
  • JBlokeUK #26 2 years ago

The gaming community, imitating the school playground since the 80's.

I knew as soon as I saw this article that it would sooner rather than later turn into a GT vs Forza "discussion".

Great to see GT5 selling so well, but was there any doubt?
  • TopKatt #27 2 years ago

Genuinely surprised that Kinectimals is nowhere to be seen in the run up to Christmas.
  • barkertron #28 2 years ago

What annoys me the most about the whole GT/Forza comment nonsense (and in fact about any fanboy slapfight idiocy) is that I can't help but read it, even though it makes me really angry. This must be what it's like to read the Daily Mail every day.

Both games are reeeeeeeeeeally good. Let's just stop now, ok.
  • septimus #29 2 years ago

Well deserved. Internet access aside, great game.

The AI isn't great, but at least it isn't like Need for Speed. The rubber banding on that is worse than Mario Kart and makes me want to twist the controller in two.

This list will be worth null and void when Cataclysm comes next week. I suspect it will park itself as no 1 and stay there for the rest of this year.

I predicted a number 2 spot for this last week because I thought COD was more mainstream and being a multiplatform title would hold into top spot. Regardless of what you think of GT5, any exclusive that knocks COD off of top spot, albeit temporarily, has sold pretty damn well. Especially when you consider COD was only released 3 weeks ago.

I mean AC Brotherhood is very popular and is multiplatform but even that couldn't manage top spot. A staggering achievement by GT5.
  • Scopeh #32 2 years ago

stand by for next week, when World of Warcraft-Cataclysm knocks GT5 off the tOP perch.
  • EGoode #33 2 years ago

As long as it knocks a COD game off the top spot I don't care what game it is. Well done to GT5 all the same. :)

"...any exclusive that knocks COD off of top spot, albeit temporarily, has sold pretty damn well. Especially when you consider COD was only released 3 weeks ago. "
Well spoken! It seems that having a ridiculous marketing budget only gets you to 1st spot for the first week of sales, after that CoD:BLOPS sales went down pretty fast. ( http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/20... ). I just hope that last weeks GT5-has-no-ads-complainers now understand why no big budget was wasted on marketing.

  • kangarootoo #40 2 years ago

    @levitate

What Cataclysm is. You said it will knock everything off the top spot, but it may shock you to discover I'd never heard of it.

So now I know its a WoW expansion (which no doubt you will tell me is understating things somewhat), I don't doubt it will take the top spot (as I'm led to believe WoW is "quite popular";).
  • sfp_noodle #41 2 years ago

    @des

Indeed, it isn't AC: B debut week, but my point is is that a very popular multiplatform game didn't knock COD of it's perch when it debuted, so GT5's achievement is no small feat considering it's an exclusive.

Sorry, I thought everyone knew by now that Blizzard's third expansion is coming very soon. Especially since there is advertisement all over Eurogamer for the game.

I'm still busy leading my team to fame and glory in FM2011 though so it doesn't bother me. I'm just saying this list will have the expansion parked at the number 1 spot for the foreseeable future.
  • layleeloo #43 2 years ago

Slikz - read posts properly "GT5 looking like a PS2 game?! Bollocks.... "

The post says PLAYS like the PS2 game, which it blatantly does - as reviewers have said themselves. Its evident throughout. No progressions what so ever on the gameplay front. Just on the mathematical front.
  • Beano #44 2 years ago

"GT is both frustrating and awesome at the same time.

    addicted."

Well said - GT5 is a letdown and unpolished, but somehow it's still fun to play and very addictive :)

Still think Forza 3 overall the best game of the two (but not much) - main reason it's a more complete package and accessible to all players while still deep.
  • Beano #45 2 years ago

"No progressions what so ever on the gameplay front. Just on the mathematical front. "

I cannot agree here - the AI is improved a lot and handling and physics are also better. But apart from that - PD seems to be stuck in the past, not have ambitions to innovate or even try to catch up to what other racing games does.
  • funkateer #46 2 years ago

"No progressions what so ever on the gameplay front. Just on the mathematical front. "

Being first and foremost a driving sim, the 'mathematical front' *IS* the 'gameplay front' as far as I'm concerned.
  • Darren #47 2 years ago

I was planning on buying Epic Mickey after Christmas (if no-one buys it for me as a present) but I have to say that I'm surprised that it didn't enter the Top 40! Hasn't it been advertised at all or are Wii owners just not bothered about 'proper' games anymore? :?

GT5 entering at number one is absolutely no surprise to me but having spent four days playing it I can't shake off the feeling of disappointment. It's OK I guess but for a game that been six years in the making it has far too many rough edges and lacks the polish and addiction factor I'd expect from a triple A game.
  • PoundHound #48 2 years ago

I bought Splatterhouse and Majin this week and having finished Splatterhouse and played a couple of hours of Majin, I'm disappointed neither could squish in to the top 40, especially for Majin, which is a lovely little game.

"COD battered" might have been a better subtitle? Too obvious?

    Vanquish outsold Epic Mickey? Wow.
  • mattaius #50 2 years ago

Definitely good to see a PS3 exclusive at the top of the charts.

Would like to throw my opinion in on the whole Forza vs. GT thing: - I've always been a PS3 owner, and a bit of a fanboy if i'm honest. But recently bought a 360 after playing Trials HD at the Expo (which is one of the best games in all history btw) and went on to get Forza 3. Forza 3 is an absolutley fantastic racing game, in every way, and whilst i'm sure i will take the plunge and buy GT5 (once i've finished New Vegas!) i'm in no rush to as Forza has everything i could want. What i would say to everyone is, get the racing game that's on your format, either GT or Forza, but don't bitch about the other one because they're both brilliant games, and anyone that owns both consoles should just get both anyway! Anyone agree?!....

"Sorry, I thought everyone knew by now that Blizzard's third expansion is coming very soon"

This is what I found kind of funny. WoW is both extremely popular, and extremely niche at the same time. People that play it are consumed by it, and people that don't play it know almost nothing about it.

Anyway, this is a GT thread so lets knock it on the head, or you are gonna get us both into trouble :)
  • kangarootoo #53 2 years ago

    @layleeloo

"No progressions what so ever on the gameplay front. Just on the mathematical front."

GT is a simulation, above all else. That is why I personally don't enjoy it as I said earlier. But there is no doubt that lots of people enjoy simulation software, and as I also said earlier, I'd be foolish to critisise it simply because its not the game I might prefer it to be if I were forced to play it (which of course, I'm not).

I really liked RDR, but I'd be mad to say GT could do with a bit more cow herding in it.
  • curtlikesmeat #54 2 years ago

I wouldn't have thought Cataclysm would be at the top for masses of time; surely it's the time of game that most people who are currently playing will buy it in that first week.

Edit: that sort of almost made sense.
    Edited by curtlikesmeat at 29/11/10 @ 13:44
  • Bigmac1910 #55 2 years ago

    @Darren

For me it's the opposite, I was really disappointed in the beginning but the more I play GT5 the more I enjoy it. And hopefully future patches will remedy most of the issues.

About Epic Mickey, I would love to buy it for the PS3 as I already have the Move controllers, and I sold my Wii months ago and won't be buying it again.
  • GarethBale3 #56 2 years ago

I do not have a PS3 but I'm really glad GT5 has knocked COD of its perch.

GT5 and games like it need to be supported I want developers taking their time to make the best game they can not just making a quick buck off their tried and tested IP.

COD is fun for what it is but by no means is it a "great" game, it will be forgotten in years to come unlike the true "great" games that always still get a mention.

If your not big MP (which personally bores me after a few sessions not mentioning the the idiots you need to mute) then there is very little value in your purchase and after a week you move on. There is nothing ever so memorable that you must see again by replaying through it. Black Ops is a rental for me get your fix and forget about it. The next one is always just round the corner so what did all that XP get you in MP? oh yeah nothing.

Start on Vet finish on Vet , move on.

    Well done GT5

My initial comment (#1) was "Unsurprising"

This is neither a negative nor positive comment. I am merely stating that i am not surprised simply because it is such a huge game with much hype that has built up over the years. I fail to see how this deserves 22 (at last count) negatives. Is it a case of everyone disagreed and thought it was in fact a surprise that it made it to the top of the chart?

Same goes for comment from UltraSoundWave - no reason to neg that either. Some people on here really are odd.

"how can any self respecting 'gamer' miss out on exclusives"

It's called being an adult with other financial and time based responsibilities like jobs, girlfriends and children and so forth. Plus some of us have gaming PC's therefore rendering the Xbox 360 largely redundant unless you are still into Brainless, generic sci fi shooters like Halo and Gears or middle of the road RPG's like Fable. I don't mean to say that in a fanboyish way either as I am largely a PC gamer with a DS, Wii and and soon PS3.
  • Cheapshot #71 2 years ago

Good to see GT on top, really deserves it - it's brilliant value for money for one thing, a game that'll last you years.

If Sony get their arses into gear and give the game a proper advertising campaign this game will ride high for a good while yet, a lot of people I've spoken to didn't even realise it was out and had given up hope of a release a long time ago.
  • Brianstorm #72 2 years ago

Forza is for noobs and casual gamers. GT is still the benchmark for anyone serious about their gaming.
  • layleeloo #73 2 years ago

@kangarootoo. Yes, I know its a Sim. All GT's have been Sims. I have loved all GT's and had all GT's since launch. What I said is not saying I dislike this game, I am simply saying the game hasnt progressed any other than graphical polish. Even the menu system is hurrendous and feels more like GT2. The install is a laughable feature and as why they couldnt do a full install I will never know. I'd rather wait 3 hours for a full install than 1 hour for a partial one and still be hanging around every time you do something while it installs more. You have to nail the game to get it speed up any from caching. However, the career menu screen, which has been cache's many times still takes an age to load after each race. Once to the point where I thought it had crashed. When you unlock cars at the end of the race is a very poor experience too as you have to view each car to accept,k then say no you dont want to get into it, all of which is taking a good while to load. It is these niggles which make the game feel archaic.

There are nice points like I love the GT TV and the quality of the video, and I like the polish of the cars, but as an overall game experience it left me feeling nothing but dissapointed and worst of all, bored with all the waiting around. Not something I would expect of a game of this calibre which could have been executed better through full installs, speedier loading times, better menu screens and nav and perhaps this would have kept a little more fun factor in which sadly, I feel has dwindled through all the over techicality
  • layleeloo #74 2 years ago

@Cheapshot Good to see GT on top, really deserves it - it's brilliant value for money for one thing, a game that'll last you years.

I have a "cheapshot" for you. The reason it will last you years is becasue you spend most of that time on loading screens, even with the hour long 8GB install (having endured it all personally) ;-)
  • kobashi #75 2 years ago

"Forza is for noobs and casual gamers. GT is still the benchmark for anyone serious about their gaming."

Fanboy alert!! @brainstorm, you remind me of a friend I have. Refused to accept Forza 3 is a good sim as he was waiting for his beloved GT5. Refuses to accept that the A.I in GT plays nothing like a real driving simulator!

Mate PC driving sims have been doing things better than GT for years now.

"I have a "cheapshot" for you. The reason it will last you years is becasue you spend most of that time on loading screens, even with the hour long 8GB install (having endured it all personally) ;-) "

Err after two days of play you garnered that much eh? You must have played that game for 40 hours then...I don't mind complaints at all, but when they sound like crap then I have no other option than to speak. Pissing and moaning about load times, the game loads faster the more you play it, most of the load times are because of new areas opening up. Lag in the home screens and when you complete series and such are because of congested communication online. I take good with the bad, I still own FM3 and it's predecessors. GT5 while not a masterpiece isn't as is in it's current form especially the online part, which has already been updated once to fix issues. People gripe about this and that, but for some reason many see GT5 getting a path 3rd of release as a bad thing, but when a game doesn't get one after a issue pops up, they cry bloody murder. Internet is the home of opinion, and everyone has them too bad the complaining one tend to be what people use as a measuring stick. Since you sold the game 2 days later, one can only wonder what you expected of the game? You sure you liked driving games to be honest? No driving game enthusiast would ditch FM3 or GT5...I digress. Formulated an educated opinion after two days, incredible, must have access to time travel.

@Kobashi. Despite the article is in German, its weird how much is understandable to someone who doesnt speak a word! haha

@SavageEvil. You miss the point. Another fanboy who can't admit the negative aswell as the positive.

Regardles of the obvious and widely stated fact it gets quicker the more you play - it does not negate the fac tits a painfull - and POINTLESS experience after such a long install. There is no excuse for this when you chose to a do a full install as opposed to the intall as you go. They are both install as you go options, however one being slower than the other.

Can you also anwser then why in all that play of two days, the career home screen still taken an unworldly length of time to load something so clunky and simplistic. The career home screen had been cached countless times in my time with the career yet it still never speeded up. Therefore another poorly designed mechanic.

Considering people play games for far less than two days and form opinons, two days of career play of this game was more than enough to realise there was no fun anymore and a lot had been poorly executed. You form these opinions in 10 minutes which just become more confirmed with two days full play which is more than enough to guage relevant opinion (considering you can complete most games nowardays in 8 hours!). Why anyone would play it for more than two days is beyond me, but thats just my opinion. Neither right not wrong.

However you can't deny the facts that it is a) Poorly executed installation, B) Pointless intallation when it still installs, sorry "cache's" every time you look at something, c) has a more dreadful home screen which takes longer to load than ever before despite all the PS3's power. These are just blatant school boy errors which can ruin the whole experience from the get go.

When in a race it may be ok and nice to play - granted. I dont dispute that. However everything else around it, getting you to that race, and back to the career home screen, and then to the next race is so poorly executed it destorys the whole experience and drains any sense of fun from the mathematical exams, sorry - races becasue you are bored shitless by the time the next race starts

*forgot to add - "what were you expecting from the game". I was expecting exactly what the developers said we should - To be amazed at everything they had done and all the extra content making all the delays worth while. When tbh, the most amazing thing was the GT TV and its decent quality of its video and content. That, I praise.

@layleeloo, so because other people can do that it justifies you doing that? Everyone is doing it? Talk about elementary reasoning. Then calling me a fanboy? of what exactly? You carry on saying things that make you sound silly, the menus look like PS2, are you serious, when was the last time you fired up your PS2? I'm guessing you must be referring to the staircase positioning of the GT life race series which resembles the arcade mode set up GT3. Ignorance is something some people have in spades you know. Lloading times are painful? After two days and then sold the game, how far could you have gotten to rarely notice the loading time actually diminishing. You have made all your points after your admittance that you sold the game after the second day almost invalid. You don't even listen, read or comprehend...it's called MAIN GAME INSTALL, NOT FULL GAME INSTALL. Hence why it still INSTALLS why you play the game.

"Can you also anwser then why in all that play of two days, the career home screen still taken an unworldly length of time to load something so clunky and simplistic. I call bullshit, 2 days what level did you make it to? You don't listen at all, the career home screen suffered slowdowns because it was continuously communicating with the net which if you payed attention was set to take on 500k simultaneous connections, which as we saw was way too little therefore Sony issued a statement that you should disconnect your PS3 while playing GT5 so that your single player wouldn't suffer those long pauses in between screens. You basically formulated your decision with little knowledge of much, but what does it matter now, exactly nothing.

Really, I haven't even gone to that part of the game as of yet. Right now I have about 30 cars, done 40 or so races in A-Spec mode alone driven about 1026 miles. My PS3 is a 160g Fat version, with about 40+ gigs left after GT5 initial install and courses tend to load quicker now, you see the status bar start off and before it makes it halfway you hear the car engine and it's loaded. I bet you never seen that happen in your two day deep dive into the game to figure out everything about it. To be honest I spend a lot of time in arcade mode trying to learn my vehicles and memorize my lines. I'm not upset about your decision, it's just the fact that you surmised one in such a short time many of which could not be helped because it's how PD setup the game system to run efficiently across the board on all PS3 models. You probably could have rented GT5 from gamefly and actually got to spend time on it, not sure about other people playing through games in a couple of days. As we know games like GT and FM can't be played through in a couple of days and get into everything that it has to offer. Anyway sorry to bother you, I'm hungry and my arms are tired from using my G25.

@savagevil. "it's called MAIN GAME INSTALL, NOT FULL GAME INSTALL"

You still don't read correctly either do you. I know exactly what it is - and its utter shit. There is NO reason why they couldn't do a FULL install rather than the half assed, pointless and useless job they did. You keep going on about the two days point - when you have a valid argument on that one i may listen, but two days full play of a gem is enough to complete 99% of games on the market, so is by far enough torture to guage an opinion on this half assed game.

We waiting long enough for this game - so there would be no issue waiting a couple of hours for a full install rather than the abomination they made. You keep trying to justify this point - but its funny how professional tech analysis also says the same thing - there was no excuse for this which puts a dampener on the while experience!
