Game of the Week

I don't fancy yours much.

Here's what we were picking from: Out This Week.

Are we nearly there yet? Not quite. As the games industry's annual jamboree of big game releases shudders to a close, there are still a few bits and bobs to look forward to between now and Christmas, not least the lovely Donkey Kong Country Returns and PC gaming's clash of the titans on 7th December – World of Warcraft: Cataclysm versus Bejeweled 3.

It's been an orgiastic couple of months, but the last week of November had the feel of a nightclub just before the lights are turned on, with the last few lonely singletons on the dance floor making a desperate lunge for a date.

They might be oddballs, but they have their charms. Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom could tread on its own toes but it's an amiable oaf of a thing, while Def Jam Rapstar isn't quite as cool as it thinks it is, but it's definitely cooler than you, playa.

NBA Jam offers the promise of an enthusiastic quickie, but Splatterhouse has a slightly alarming look in its eye. Creepy. Still, it's probably Disney Epic Mickey that you really don't want to wake up next to in the morning. I'm sure he didn't look like that last night (year).

And how about those fashion victims over there – don't they know the eighties are so noughties? If you want the dirt on Tron: Evolution and Michael Jackson: The Experience, you'll have to wait for dirty stop-outs Dan and Johnny (who else) to report back next week.

Wait a second – who's this barging in late with a massive entourage and putting a platinum card behind the bar? Maybe this party isn't over after all!

Gran Turismo 5

If Super Mario 64 or Deus Ex is gaming's Citizen Kane, then Gran Turismo 5 must be its Apocalypse Now. Maybe it will never be regarded as a creative masterpiece – and I hope no members of Polyphony Digital suffered heart attacks during its making – but it's still a towering monument to one man's obsession.

Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair.

Sometimes it seems like Kazunori Yamauchi's frenzied autophilia has overcome his reason. Why include the 800 Standard car models of last-gen quality, and thus disastrously undermine your own graphical hype? To this "heroic completist" building "a Noah's Ark for cars" (copyright Christian Donlan), it must have made perfect sense, but it doesn't to at least half the internet.

Still, it's a shame that the misunderstandings, over-inflated expectations and fanboy furore (as well as the legitimate complaints) raging around GT5 right now obscure the fact that it's a gigantic achievement by its own unique standards – and also, incidentally, the best game in the series since GT2. The Gran Turismo backlash has arrived at least five years too late.

"Gran Turismo has a reputation for sterility which it really doesn't deserve. If you know cars and know where to look, there's passion and fantasy and even humour here," I wrote in my 9/10 review. "One section of GT5 communicates the spirit of motor racing in all its forms better than any other game."

Yes, next to Microsoft's relentlessly rational and well-executed Forza Motorsport 3 (which I am an equally big fan of), GT5 is inconsistent and strange. But that's because it's the result of a mad ego being given almost unlimited time and money to build a temple to his own artistry and passion. It is, in that sense, absolutely a work of art.

Think that's not something that belongs in videogames? Be careful what you wish for.

    Driving through the s curves in the AMG SLS I swear I could feel the weight of the car shifting as I maneuver through the curves, the weight of the steering wheel transmits every bump and every flaw of the Tarmac and holy crap my heart is thumping!!! GT5 is so beautiful in so many ways. I am a Porsche master mechanic and I live and breathe cars and I can tell you this is a great game and have never played anything as good as this, not even iracing is this good.

    @fragjam

    How do you plan to play it from beyond the grave?

    I haven't done a GT game since GT1 and in the meantime I've tried all three Forza games and just not clicked with them at all. GT5, however, has me hooked. Unsure why, but it does. The handling just seems spot on. I always felt like I was fighting with Forza.

    PS3 exclusive."

    It's just got a lot of inconsistencies, and some of its sublime and some is ridiculous. It's still a great game, it just depends on how easily you can overlook its flaws. It had a level of hype generated it hasn't matched and after 5 years still feels unfinished at times. It's absolutely nothing to do with being an exclusive and if anything, being GT, people are being more forgiving than usual.

    I see the standard cars as a bonus of some sort, don`t have to drive them but can if I want to and in game there is not much difference except the missing cockpit view. Of course when having a look at them in the photo mode they are not pretty, but the main purpose is to race and not to look at the cars and the driving is great :)
  • Lunastra78 #12 2 years ago

    Well there's a difference between players who have legitimate issues with the game, I know I have some, and the usual inbred trolls who are just out to talk crap about a PS3 exclusive.

    Brilliant analogy.

    Yes, after all you need something to occupy the days when you reach retirement age. GT6 should be out sometime around 2040 I guess.

    GT5 is the most ambitious racing game ever created, it has also the best and most realistic drving physics ever created in a video game...I dont know what people want more than this....
  • DoctorFouad #16 2 years ago

    @raining-upwards :

    the most important thing for a simulation racing game is : gameplay driving physics

    and in in this GT5 is the best...

    you want better online feautures ? consistent graphics ? go play another racing game, but you wont encounter the same quality of driving physics as GT5...

    @Raining_Upwards

    I've played a couple of online races with friends and it's been flawless (lag free) for us.

    The Lounge mode works really well although some of the default options are very curious. Not sure why it's getting so much grief but I did skip on the 1.01 patch (and went straight to 1.02).

    Did anyone who had real issues with 1.01 notice any improvement with 1.02 or have I just been really lucky?

    As everyone is doing Forza 3 v GT5 thing, why not do it properly I mean what if DF does a various stress road challenges, ie get up to 150 mph then with traction off, swerve hard to right then left to get the car to lose control purposefully, to compare frame by frame the physic reactions and how it may mirrors real life!

    The stress road tests would be great and interesting, rather than the graphics of the crashes, as we know the GT5's 800 standard cars take that game out of the contention.

    Both Forza 3 and GT5 are excellent games in their own right, but supporters of either would go out and make up stuff or such to torpedo opposing game, so best to have a fair and proper fight refereed by DF!

    Must have been a poor week for gaming. At least DKC will save this week
