Valve announces Portal 2 delay News • News • Eurogamer.net

The date was a lie.

Portal 2 will not make it's previously reported release date of 9th February, developer Valve has announced.

The sequel to its widely adored first person puzzler has been pushed back until 22nd April 2011.

Major bummer, right? Well, Valve is more of a glass-half-full sort.

A press release reads, "This two month slip not only marks the shortest delay in Valve's proud tradition of delays, it represents the approaching convergence of Valve Time and Real Time. Though this convergence spells doom for humanity, it will not affect the new Portal 2 release date."

The much-anticipated follow-up is in development for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Take a look at the trailer below to whet your appetite.

I appreciate that slippage is always going to happen with big creative projects, but it's rather ridiculous given the massive hoo-haa, slapping a date on it and then later having to tell people that actually it's getting pushed back.

Yes, I still worship the ground Valve walk on, but it is a tad silly.

Yeah, the far better subtitle is "Not out of beta, or releasing on time".

I must admit anything early next year is still "next year" in my mind. Until we actually hit 2011 any delays I won't even think about. Now, if Assassin's Creed Brotherhood got delayed to even January 2011 I'd be shocked, as in my brain that's ages away - not a month and a half.

The delay will more than likely make it a better game than if they had released on the original date. All that matters to me is that when I sit down to play the game it is the best that it can possibly be. It doesn't matter when I sit down to play it.

Amusing press release aside, I would like to see Valve hit a release date just once...

Perhaps they're going for a different tactic with Episode 3, with no hype, releases or preview at all, and a message will one day go up on Steam saying "it's out. Buy now".

Hell, I'll start a rumour that that's about to happen next year: Portal 2's been pushed back from Feb to make way for the surprise Episode 3 release ;D

To pick you up on your creative use of swear lingo... You can't "fuckwitt" people. You can however "fuck with" people but I don't believe that's how you meant this to be conveyed.

To use the term correct for example, I would say... "Harmonica is a fuckwitt!".

I hope this clarifies....

I'm thinking like evild_edd. I would love to be surprised by a sudden Episode 3 release along the lines of an Orange Box-esque tie-in with Portal 2, even if I think that it's unlikely. However, I do think Valve have been particularly quiet on the matter of Episode 3 for too long, now. I'd wager they're up to something crafty on that front...

This is my train of thought almost to a tee. I am awash with releases and getting about 4 games for xmas off family and gf with my spanking new PS3, so I am happy to wait for portal 2. However I am amazed to the point of exasperation about how little news there is on episode 3, its not funny any more. They better be secretly working on Half Life 3 or something alongside episode 3 in order to make this all worthwhile.
