Sony: PSPgo price cut an error

Sony websites conflict.

UPDATE: Sony's told GamesIndustry.biz that the price of the PSPgo on its official site is an error. It's not known if Sony will honour sales made at the £129 price, so if you're interested, now may be the time to fork out your hard-earned cash.

ORIGINAL STORY: Sony's slashed the price of the embattled PSPgo in the UK once again.

It's knocked £30 off the RRP of the digital-only handheld. Now, it'll set you back 129 pounds.

This latest cut follows last month's price cut, which knocked £65 off the £225 RRP.

Analysts described October's price cut as "too meagre and too late," to Eurogamer. "The UK price reduction is more dramatic, but had to be considering the recent MSRP which was too high in my opinion," M2 Research's Billy Pidgeon told Eurogamer.

"Now that 'sources' have revealed more details regarding PSP2, including a proposed fall 2011 date, it is very unlikely that these prices will clear shelves. PSP will see sharp declines this holiday into Q1 2011 without more aggressive price cuts."

The PSPgo, launched in the west last October, has been a commercial flop for Sony, although some rumours suggest it was an experiment ahead of the much-rumoured PSP2.

In May Sony CFO Bill Glaser called PSP sales "a little bit of a disappointment".

In June Sony launched a new initiative: buy a PSPgo and get 10 free games worth £225.

    PSP Go: LittleBigDisappointment

I'm not sure what most people's reason for not picking one up are, but MY reason is because it's just too small! I've had a go on one a few times and after about five minuets my hands start cramping up because of the limited space on the device. No price cuts can ever sort this for me. I just hope their next machine is a bit more finger-friendly.

    Still don't want one.

I'll wait for the magic £100 price point. Just finished Ghost of Sparta, the last major PSP game of this year on my PSP 3000. The PSPGo will be perfect for storing the many many PSOne classics I have. If they still give away the 10 free games I'll see it as a bonus.

Even now the price is pretty good considering how many good games your getting. It's just a shame there's too many racers in that list. If they replaced two of the older games with Peace Walker and Ghost Of Sparta I'm sure a hell of a lot more people would be interested.

I actually think this is really good, for those who have never owned a PSP. For the same price as a Kinect this xmas (I own both, I'm not a fanboy!!), that would give you a years worth of mobile gaming/comic fun before PSP 2 arrives. There are some great games for available for the system, including loads of cheap PS1 classics. Remember also, that these will almost certainly be able to be carried over to the PSP2.
If you have a PS3 with Playstation Plus already, this is even better, with 2 minis and a PSP game included already every month. I'm loving trying out games like Abes Oddysee that I missed first time around :)

    /awaits the onslaught of negs.
  • lucky_jim #7 2 years ago

If this still comes with the 10 free game downloads then that's astonishingly good vfm. I suspect it doesn't though.

    @lucky_Jim

Sony extended the 10 free games offer until January 2011. Supposedly to push a few sales during Christmas. This new price point will help that.

If this year really is the PSP's swan song, its been one hell of a ride. I don't think I've played my PSP this much since 2006! Will probably sell it now and purchase a PSPGo when its cheap enough as the PSOne classics only look good when played on a tiny screen. Their beauty is destroyed on a HDTV

Even if it's comes under £100 AND comes with free 10 games, who wanna bet it still won't sell like how Sony's wet dream would want?!

A real pity considering the hardware and some great games but at the end it's simply that that market itself cast judgement on the utter arrogant and stupidity of Sony at expecting high price point and unforgivable sins of ignoring loyal PSP owners with a large UMD collection a way of transferring games.

Great news for consumers all round as Sony will be much more respectful of the consumers comes PSP2.
  • actionfitz #10 2 years ago

cant pick up cheap older games for it... not interested.
  • drxym #11 2 years ago

The PSPGo should have cost less than a regular PSP out of the gate. In the absence of a sync cable or UMD peripheral, owners have no choice but to be bilked by PSN. Full RRP means silly profits for Sony and I bet they'd be £5-8 better off per game at least compared to games sold on UMD.

But at this point it smacks of desperation. Everyone senses a PSP2 or a PSP 1/2 phone can't be far off and there aren't many new games to tempt people either. I reckon Sony are just trying to get rid of stock and I certainly wouldn't want to pay for something which may shortly be obsolete.

There are loads of new games for the PSP. In fact, the last year has probably been its strongest ever for software.

£130 with 10 free games is starting to sound like a bargain i have to say...
  • Kazzahdrane #14 2 years ago

Even if you don't intend to buy a single game for it, £130 with 10 games is pretty damn good.
  • merkdot #15 2 years ago

at this price it's just useful enough as a remote access for a PS3 regardless of the games.

never mind that there are an awful lot of nice minis to be had - definitely worth it for PSN+ subscribers now.
  • mungolikebeans #16 2 years ago

i love my PSPGo - it's a lovely bit of kit. It's the only handheld that gets anywhere near a console experience (despite it's obvious flaws)

Gutted i'm an early adopter though - it wasn't affordable until now.

Oh well, that's £100 for a years worth of entertaining dumps, i suppose!
  • Bagpuss #17 2 years ago

Lol...cant wait to see Sony make all the same mistakes again with the PSP2 as regards price.

When it comes to pricing, Sony just dont get it, and never will, they still have this perceived image of themselves as a company people are willing to pay a price premium for.

The price it should have been on release, I think. That's on par with the standard PSP line.
  • Nodebug #22 2 years ago

Nice tactic Knock it down in price to clear out stock before the PSP Phone comes out....
  • SYS64738 #23 2 years ago

    "£99.99 is the magic number."

Something tells me that when it finally sells at that price your 'magic number' will fall accordingly...

I initially experienced this problem on racing game Gran Turismo (which is one of the 10 freebies); I first moved to tethering a PS3 Dualshock 3 controller via bluetooth and was surprised when I continued to cramp up.

I eventually realised that the most uncomfortable buttons on the old PSP are the shoulder buttons and the most comfortable ones on the PSP Go are the shoulder buttons. Reconfiguring the accelerator and brake buttons fixed the cramp issue on both the PSP Go or when using it with the DS3 pad.

If the price cut was used by customers 'in good faith' ie, it looked like a legitimate price cut and not a mistake, they don't have to honour it unless they taken the money... But they leave themselves open to be royally screwed by trading standards.

    £1000 fine. Per mispriced item.

I have my PSP-Go for about a year now and it has finally won me over. I "upgraded" from a PSP-2000 (The middle one) which was upgraded from a PSP Phat.

Yeah it was a pain initially getting rid of the U(W)MD's, but while on holiday this year, all I had to bring was the PSP-Go and that was it. With the older PSP, I was lugging about all the UMD's with me in a seperate carry case, which in all fairness was a pain in the ass. Also the battery life is much improved and with the 16 GB M2 card in there is 32 ish GB to play with.

I currently have 15 or so psp games, 3 PS1 games, some Minis and about 10 Movies on the PSP-Go. It's great as a portable gaming platform.
