L.A. Noire out spring 2011

Xbox 360 version confirmed.

Rockstar's new open world detective game L.A. Noire will be released in the spring of 2011.

That's according to the game's first proper trailer ("made entirely from in-game footage"), which you can see below. Rockstar also confirmed the game will be released on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

L.A. Noire, announced years ago in 2005, is a 1940s crime thriller based around you rising through the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Central to everything is a magnificent-sounding motion-capture system, which records the look, voice and actions of real-life actors and then processes them into the game.

Such a level of detail enables a sophisticated interrogation mechanic, whereby players can judge facial expressions and behavioural quirks to determine whether a suspect is holding anything back. Creator Team Bondi is also said to have written an unprecedented 300 pages of script for the game.

"L.A. Noire is the first game to really explore what it means to be a detective, and offers players the opportunity to solve crimes blending classic action, investigation and interrogation, in the endless pursuit of what's right," Rockstar said.

The mouth animation is very well done, I'm watching it with no sound & some of those scenes you can almost lip read.

Really looking forward to this, fingers crossed it doesn't end up like mafia 2...

Another fun DF Face-off to look forward to. Could this once thought exclusive PS3 title turn out to be another technical smack in the face for all Playstation owners?
  • HisDudness #5 2 years ago

Depends on the level of grass coverage in 1940's LA. If high, than I'm afraid they might as well abandon the PS3 version...

Another question might be, how much content would need to be cut to fit onto one DVD?

I keep getting this and Rockstar Norths "Agent" confused all the time. When it said confirmed for 360, I got kind of excited, then I read Team Bondi in the article. *sigh*. Don't get me wrong, this looks very good but I would prefer a new (non-ping pong) franchise from R* North on 360 to this

Anyone with a brain in their head knew it was coming to the Xbox 360 back in 2006. In 2005, it was published by Sony. In 2006, it became a rockstar property, and was changed to "next generation consoles." Funny how people kept insisting on it being PS3 exclusive in spite of that.

    @Deckard1

Calm down my little angry friend - I was merely taking the piss. And ever so slightly baiting... for someone like yourself. I couldn't give a shit really, it's just a bit of fun.

Oh and for the record I do in fact own a PS3.
  • Deckard1 #15 2 years ago

Well I only own a 360 and you're still pissing me off. I'm pretty sure all you do on here is fanboy shit. Whats the point? What do you gain out of it except for looking like a twat?
  • firef7y #16 2 years ago

I know I'll get hate for this, but why are these videos motioning compatible yet? It's a platform that's extremely popular yet I still have to go to another website to view the video. At least have the iPhone app play videos.

That Des character too, highly annoying in the comments section.

Hands down the best facial 'animation' I've seen in a game. The '' are there because I believe the system they use basically records the face and converts it and puts it into the game, saving many man hours actually animating the face.

The sales of Heavy Rain should have given Take 2 the confidence that this has got a chance of selling well. This is one of my most anticipated games of next year.

Lol @ Deckard's impotent online anger. I'm pissing you off am I? Really? That's kind of worrying for yourself, I'd have thought.

There's nowt as fun as lazy wind ups via the EG iPhone app and the sofa, it has to be said.

CaptainQuint is only so called cos his podgy fingers accidentally caught the "i" when he pressed the "u".
    It shouldn't be there.

    Probably.

I'm intrigued by this open world genre being done from the point of view of a detective. Most of them are just about playing as criminals and wreaking general havoc - this sort of crime investigation and law enforcement could be a twist that might be able to get me interested in the genre again.

Until they show some gameplay video I will remain skeptical about this game though.

L.A. Noire is from the guys that did the Getaway so I am hesitant about getting too excited about this. It had to have been good enough for Rockstar to give Sony an exclusive game in exchange for publishing rights though.

Sony had originally funded L.A. Noire and when Rockstar picked it up, they either had to compensate Sony for what they had already put in OR give an exclusive. They chose to give the exclusive Agent.

Hope it makes up for the disappointment that was MAFIA 2.

The original MAFIA was a classic, MAFIA 2 a let down!
  • djreplay #31 2 years ago

Its not made by the Getaway team, that was Team Soho (Sony 1st party studio). Team Bondi just have the main man behind The Getaway (Brendan Mc Namara) I believe.
  • Monkeyspoon #32 2 years ago

Hopefully its lead on PS3 and ported to 360.
  • Roarster #33 2 years ago

I love the setting but I really can't feel any enthusiasm for another game that I assume will follow the now standard Rockstar template. I'm not sure I can stomach another game with the awful GTA/RDR character control, driving and combat either.

Hopefully I'm wrong and it's something totally different because it's certainly refreshing to see big budget games step away from the standard gangster/war/space marine tropes.
  • Roarster #34 2 years ago

@jackdoe Not sure how true it is but I seem to remember reading that Sony were due to publish this but eventually passed on it due to it's extended (and allegedly difficult) development, hence the change to multi-platform with Sony then picking up The Agent instead.
  • Soton4084 #35 2 years ago

Looks good! I'm hoping it will be a bit like Heavy Rain, but allow you a lot more freedom to investigate cases the way you want to. For example, who do you question? What inferences should you make? If the evidence is all a bit too convienient, does that suggest the person might be being framed? There are so many possibilities out there. Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I hope that this game lives upto expectations.
  • muse88_James #36 2 years ago

Day 1 buy. Reason? It's a Rockstar game, and it will be immense!

I am definitely keeping an eye on this game, looks promising, though I'm still not entirely sold on whether or not the facial animation will be good enough to tell if someone is "Holding anything back", despite the excellent lip sync. Time will tell.

I also have to wonder if Team Bondi are getting annoyed that lots of people are emphatically referring to LA Noire as a Rockstar game, when Rockstar are "only" publishing it, not developing it. Suppose it always happens when a well know developer/publisher is publishing another dev's game though.
