"Not much hope" for GT5 in 2010 - source

But Sony sticks to "before Christmas".

Industry sources have expressed concern to Eurogamer that high-profile racing game Gran Turismo 5 will miss Sony's promised "before Christmas" release date and instead come out some time next year.

One source told us that current schedules list the Polyphony Digital game as "TBC", and that there is "not too much hope" that it will hit shop shelves this year.

Gran Turismo 5, perhaps the most anticipated PS3 game ever, was scheduled for release today.

Last month Sony announced it had been delayed to "before Christmas", claiming "creator Kazunori Yamauchi and the team at Polyphony Digital want to make certain they are creating a racing experience of the highest quality".

At the time Sony tweeted to say a new date would be confirmed "before the end of the month". That, obviously, did not happen.

Current UK retailer listings for the game offer a mixed message.

GAME says it'll be released in 2011, and it's without a release window at all on both Amazon and Play.

However, Zavvi and Shopto both say it'll be released on 3rd December.

While retailer release dates are often placeholder, they offer food for thought.

Despite the concern, Eurogamer has been told that Sony is sticking to its official December 2010 statement without providing a firm date.

Surely without naming the source this is as valid as 'some bloke in the pub said...'

Journalists never reveal their sources, with good reason.

Has anyone really been expecting anything else?

Im sure they can still make it before Christmas, if they dont it might affect Killzone 3's sells next year.

Of course they can't quote their sources, because the sources will then be sacked or kept away from any information like this in future. In fact, I'm fairly sure that the right to not name sources has been upheld in court.

    There is no GT5.
Its just a stunt to get people to buy a PS3.
  • SteveHolt #15 2 years ago

they should make a movie about GT5's development, that would be a wild ride. They would call it "Some Kind Of monster", like the Metallica documentary about St Anger.
  • finexi #16 2 years ago

    There's smoke, there's fire...

Every single shop has a different release date, and almost every shop has 2011 as the release year. Do anyone really thinks it's going to be released this year? When will Sony annouce it? A day before the release date? That would kill the game...

Same happened when the Kinect price was tagged by the shops. No one wanted to believe it, but it got confirmed.

    Never say never, folks!

"At the time Sony tweeted to say a new date would be confirmed "before the end of the month". That, obviously, did not happen."

Never mind discussion about the significance of an un-named source - strikes me the issue is that Sony made 2 promises:
    1. It will be released before Christmas.
    2. The release date would be confirmed by the end of October.
The fact they have not fulfilled promise 2 suggests they will not meet promise 1. Add to that a wide range of dates given by retailers, and the fact that release dates for most games are sorted well before release date, and I think it best to assume it will now be 2011. Which is a shame as I'd been hoping for Christmas. Oh well, maybe Easter?
  • UncleLou #29 2 years ago

Surely without naming the source this is as valid as 'some bloke in the pub said...'

Depends on if you trust the journalist or not. If you believe him that he'll only report something like that if he thinks the source is reliable, the name of the source is irrelevant. If not, then you're right. But that's just how it works.
  • liverpoolfc #30 2 years ago

@UncleLou: Depends on if you trust the journalist or not.

And EG would never post anything that baits fanboys would they? ;)

    EDIT:
Just to clarify, I am neither defending or attacking any party here. Sony have yet to publish a revised release date but have promised before Xmas and EG have an "industry insider" telling them it is a crock. One of them is going to be proven wrong. Whatever happens, I am sure I'll get it - either as an Xmas present or when it comes out,

Despite the concern, Eurogamer has been told that Sony is sticking to its official December 2010 statement without providing a firm date.

Which is obviously PR bullshit and a deflecting tactic from Sony as you would pretty much expect, and retails would require, a firm release date only a month before it's due to be on shelves.
  • bodhi85uk #36 2 years ago

Whenever they release this there will doubtless be bugs or silly oversights. They've been working on it for so long that they simply wont be able to take that step back, and view it with the fresh eyes that are required to spot such oversights.

They just need to take a leap of faith and release it because this is never ending cycle. The only thing keeping me interested in this whole saga is the prospect of Duke Nukem Forever beating it the shops.
  • JBlokeUK #37 2 years ago

I can see it now. GT5 does come out before Christmas, accept for Europe of course.

These delays haven't bothered me one bit as it'll be nice to actually buy a game on release which isn't riddled with bugs, but it would annoy me if it isn't released before Christmas as it's the only thing I want for Christmas this year.
  • peterfll #38 2 years ago

We just asked Kazunori Yamauchi, the father of Gran Turismo, in an interview here at SEMA, the question on everyone's minds — when will GT5 finally be released? His response: "The discs are being stamped as we speak."

The picture above is Kazunori making a disc-stamping motion with his hands as he answered our query on the ever-shifting release date. We did talk about a number of different topics other than the release — and we'll have more coming shortly — but for the moment, we thought we'd at least bring you that response.

  • ronuds #41 2 years ago

I don't see how, without a scheduled release date, this is supposed to be released this year. If it is, it's going to be the most rushed release ever.

    For a game 6+ years in development - that's saying something! :p
  • NotSoSlim #42 2 years ago

Doesnt matter if it rushed and only certain games would really get away with a rushed release. The people who want the game will buy it and then it will be down to Sony to market it heavily post release.

Not ideal but they have to get it out before Xmas just to take advantage of both pre Xmas and post Xmas. Anyway here is hoping for a date soon
  • makeamazing #43 2 years ago

According to blockbuster, they have it down for Feb 2011.

Sony said they were going to announce its release by the end of OCT, if it was a simple case of a problem at the planet making the disks, they would know by now and would have said something. I am starting to believe it will be next year, which would be a big dropped ball by Sony this year, what with this and LBP. They had 2010 in the bag with regards to the releases, oh well that does probably mean alot of games in 2011.... but personally i would prefer a spread of games throughout the year, rather than all in the first three months :)

I don't know - how many times have we seen some site nobody's ever heard of report some BS just to get hits?

I've never heard of jalapolotnik.com - has anyone else? It's likely that the head of a major development company would give them exclusive news, though.
  • sfp_noodle #51 2 years ago

Not to sound like a knob, because I enjoy Eurogamer but I've always got the feeling EG have been rather dismissive of GT5. They've always been quick to post something negative about it, like a delay, but in terms of actual coverage and interviews, there's been fuck all. You go to sites like IGN, Gamespot, 1up and the like and there's tonnes of videos, screenshots, articles and previews. I haven't seen anything like that on EG. They're quick to comment on delays yet they fail to acknowledge that GT5 has been officially delayed a grand total of TWO times. Once in Japan where the only place a release date was announced as March and now this November which it narrowly missed. I can almost expect a negative review score come release time.
  • sfp_noodle #52 2 years ago

    @ronuds

In case you didn't notice, jalopnik is a motoring website. It's quite likely they would know something like this. The fact that even sites like sixthaxis are reporting this news shows that it seems pretty legit. Unlike EG, at least they quote their source. Like many people have said, EG could have got their source from some guy down the pub. I'll bet it was Steve Balmer though. The crafty little devil.

I can understand simulating, say flying a plane. Or a train. But simulating something that is a pretty fundamental part of life, right down to passing your driving license?

It's no different, in my eyes, from the criticisms levelled at the Sims where you are spending your free time in a virtual world managing your finances, your career and your family.

Maybe I just don't get it. Though, oddly, I slightly enjoyed Forza 3, which I was really not expecting to (impulse buy collector's edition in post-christmas sale)
  • sfp_noodle #61 2 years ago

    @darkmorgado

That's beyond the point. It was rather ignorant on your part. If your not into 'car porn' as your describing GT5, why are you even commenting on this article? You don't have to wank over Auto Trader or whatever to be a racing fan. Fact is, if you bothered to head over to jalopnik's website and bothered reading a little, you'd know it was a motoring site. I don't think you even bothered heading to the website to check it out.

There are still people I know, some of them friends, who have not heard of Eurogamer and actually think it's some home-made site without even checking. That's ignorance and stupidity. Your comments aren't far removed from theirs.

Because everyone has different tastes in cars.

Yeah, but that's not my point. The point I was responding to is that GT is there to allow people to drive cars they never have a hope of driving in real life (though you could always do a test-drive at a garage). Ford Escorts are ubiquitous.

The closest allegory I can come up with at this time of night would be, say, a career simulator, designed to allow you to follow any career your heart desired - but it focuses on Data Entry or Asda Checkout Girl as much as International Rock Star.
  • metamorphic #66 2 years ago

Eurogamer, perhaps you need to further evaluate your "sources"? http://www.vg247.com/2010/11/02/kazunori...

Yamauchi has jussssst confirmed the game's gone gold. In your face, EG! IN YOUR FACE! :-P

  • darkmorgado #67 2 years ago

That VG story again just links to the Jalopnik one.

I'm just playing Devil's Advocate here - after all, it's not the first time a dev has contradicted reality (Milo and Kate?). I'll believe it when it comes directly from Sony's mouth.

But I still think it has been handled badly - in the run up to christmas, retailers will already have drawn up their plans for allocated floor space and promotional deals for titles. Having a game that doesn't even have a firm release date a month before christmas could end in retail disaster.
  • ZuluHero #68 2 years ago

"The closest allegory I can come up with at this time of night would be, say, a career simulator, designed to allow you to follow any career your heart desired - but it focuses on Data Entry or Asda Checkout Girl as much as International Rock Star."

One might say that you wouldn't truely appreciate one without the experienceof the other though. And that's even more applicable in a game because it gives you progression from one to the other.

But most people are not going to have the opportunity to drive their Escort at high speed on the Monaco F1 circuit (Cote d'Azur in GT5) without the police gettting narky at you. As with all games, whether it is GT, the Sims, or Medal of Honor, it is about escapism,

You wan't word from Sony's mouth that it's gone gold? I'm guessing you believed MS outright when they said Kinect would be the best thing ever, lag free and have some of the most sophisticated and original games ever seen. Because you know, every preview by a games site, EG included, Kinect was declared a laggy pile of shite.

I'm not saying your attracted to Kinect mind, but I question your need for a source for GT5 when I doubt you even own a PS3 judging by your game collection. A highly regarded, for motorsport fans at least, website has confirmed the game has gone gold. For fans of the series it's a relief considering the ridiculous time frame. Also, considering you are most likely not even going to purchase this game, I wonder why you are even commenting on this article because you are not really offering anything constructive.

Your comments about retailers having made shoip floor space made available for other stuff is odd. GT5 is huge. I don't think you quite understand how huge. It's huge for Sony and PS3 fans like Halo is for MS and 360 fans. It will shift in numbers and will be at the front of every major games retailer. Even if they announced the release date only a week in advance, shop floors would shift everything minus COD and Halo to get it out in the public.

Erm actually no, I've always had my reservations about Kinect and have quite vocally expressed them on this site. I think the tech has been massively downgraded, is stupidly overpriced, and that MS is chasing the blue ocean at the expense of the consumer base that got it where it is today.

the developers are treating us all without respect. without us they're nothing. excuse after excuse, i'm not happy. the very least they should do is give us a definite date, not false lies. they should have the decency to offer some sort of gift as an apology, ie free in game cars and credits.....

I'm not saying your attracted to Kinect mind, but I question your need for a source for GT5 when I doubt you even own a PS3 judging by your game collection

And how do you know what my games collection is, exactly?

    My current-gen games count: 26 wii games, 92 Xbox 360 games, 27 PS3 games, 11 PSP, 21 DS, 250+ PC.

The only reason that the Xbox count is higher than PS3 is because I prefer the pad and multiplatofrms generally perform better. I tend to pick up every PS3 exclusive regardless, mainly because I'm a self-confessed gaming addict that buys around 100 games a year.

I'm starting to get worried that GT5 might come out after GT6.
  • sfp_noodle #82 2 years ago

    @darkmorgado

Companies would shift their entire Christmas business strategy for a COD game had it been delayed. They would delay it for a Halo game too. Even Gears of War. Why? Because they're titanic names within the game industry. They shift in the millions and attract even the most casual gamer. GT5 also falls into the list of names. It's Sony's biggest exclusive. Not only that, it has a massive public following proved by the fact that the series lifetime sales dwarf even that of Halo's. That's saying an awful lot about the popularity of the game.

Anyway, I very strongly doubt retailers even need to bother promoting the game on their floor. All they have to do is put up a poster in their window saying "GT5 in stock" and it'll sell by the truck load. As I mentioned before, I think your underestimating the importance of this release. After COD and AC Brotherhood, there's no real 'must have' game coming out at Christmas. There's NFS Hot Pursuit, but if GT5 is confirmed for December, and judging by the story so far it probably will be, I fully expect an 80% upward sales figure in favour of the 360 due to people waiting for GT5. I doubt many will buy both.
  • darkmorgado #83 2 years ago

Companies would shift their entire Christmas business strategy for a COD game had it been delayed. They would delay it for a Halo game too. Even Gears of War.

Possibly, but not when it's only 8 weeks before christmas and the game still doesn't have a confirmed release date.

And I still don't think that GT5 has mass-appeal to be a huge system-seller. A hardcore driving simulator is a very niche genre, and the early impressions ive read of GT5 have been a bit dodgy. The damage modelling in particular is meant to be hilariously poor.
  • sfp_noodle #84 2 years ago

"The damage modelling in particular is meant to be hilariously poor."

As opposed to Forza which has NO DAMAGE MODEL yet still managed a 9/10 here on EG? That too is 3 games in and started out on a more powerful hardware in the original Xbox. There's been two entries on the 360 but neither have a damage model but he racing is still excellent. I managed to sample GT5 at the EG expo and it's coming along beautifully. I'm not just talking about visuals, and let's make this clear right now, GT5 wipes the floor with Forza in this department. But in terms of gameplay they are definately equal at the least. The car's handle perfectly.

Admitedly I didn't get to play the more advanced modes but we already know there's a ridiculous amount of content packed into the title. That alone is enough for me to rank it above Forza 3 (I've actually been playing that recently if you glance at my games collection through my profile). To be perfectly honest, I'm not too concerned what reviews this might get as any doubts I had were erased when I got my hands on it at the expo. I agree with you, the damage modelling isn't great, but at least it's finally in there. It's progress. Something I didn't really see in Forza 3 with the rehashed tracks and cars from Forza 2 dressed up as collector's content. It's still a great racing game mind.

Anyway, it's late so I'll leave it at that. Goodnight

Edit - Spelling. It's awfully late so can't really type. Apologies

    @darkmorgardo - ''And I still don't think that GT5 has mass-appeal to be a huge system-seller.''

Are you serious? Gran Turismo is the biggest selling Playstation game of all time, which means a hell of a lot of people would have bought a Playstation to play a Gran Turismo game? A lot of my friends bought a PS2 just to get the latest Gran Turismo game. Gran Turismo 5, despite the delays, is still the most anticipated PS3 game yet, if not most anticipated game full stop, which no doubt explains the pure anger shown by most when it does get delayed.

I'd put my house on Gran Turismo 5 being a ''huge'' system seller, especially when we see the GT5/PS3 bundles that will likely come about on release.

Someone really needs to get fired for this whole GT5 debacle...

Well they're currently printing the discs. I still have some hope in there being a 2010 release :\

    @sfp_noodle

"As opposed to Forza which has NO DAMAGE MODEL"

So you havent actually played Forza then.

Forza 2 and 3 both have visual damage modelling and a very extensive performance damage model.

    Way to sound clueless.

Yeah I remember smashing my Bugatti up pretty good in Forza. Unless I was just imagining the damage model.

    Shouldn't the headline be:
    --
"Not much hope" for GT5 in Europe in 2010
    --

If the discs are in production, then it's just a question of volume now.
Do they produce enough to meet demand worldwide, then release?
Or do they product enough to meet demand in the US and release before Christmas? Then Europe and Japan in the new year?
