Sniper dev licenses CryENGINE3

It knows "what gamers want to play".

Sniper: Ghost Warrior developer City Interactive has licensed Crytek's CryENGINE3 for two new games.

The Polish developer offered no details as to what those games might be, but expect a release for both of them in the "next couple of years".

Sniper: Ghost Warrior, despite being not very good at all, has been quite the success story for the studio. Revenue for the first nine months of the year is up 230 per cent.

Carl Jones, director of CryENGINE global business development offered up a little insight as to why. "City has shown with the success of Sniper: Ghost Warrior that they understand what gamers want to play.

"CryENGINE3 and our dedicated, global support team will help them achieve their vision on more platforms, with the speed and high quality values that our engine and tools uniquely provide to developers."

    "City has shown with the success of Sniper: Ghost Warrior that they understand that some people really will buy any old shit we make.

    Fixed.

    You can put the word "sniper" on a can of dog food and the manufacturers of that would probably also see a 230% increase in revenue.

    We're bitching but he's right. That game defied all the reviews and logic to sell pretty well, without gimmick or peripheral. They did something right.

    @MiniAmin
    I am a millionaire troll who has nothing better do to than buy terrible games to skew sales figures. So you can blame me- I bought 20000 copies of this game.

    Did it cost a fiver and some pasties? 230% o_O

    They used the word "Sniper". Because they sure as fuck didn't make a decent game. I mean, there was hardly any fucking sniping in it, to start with!

    Have any of you played it? :) Maybe it's ton of fun? Some people called me a retard for buying KL 2. I looked at this but avoided it. Another explanation could be that the sniper genre is pretty thin on releases and this was good enough for enthusiasts.

    That's not true.. The guys with AKs across the valley from your vantage point seem to be able to snipe at you when you're crouched in dense undergrowth wearing your ghillie suit. AI is second to none..

    /sarcasm

    I'm guessing people like the feeling of empowerment they imagine comes with being a sniper. Since nobody else is bothering to deliver that (well, except for ArmA but that's probably too complicated for the console gamers that buy Sniper)...

    Speaking of which, whatever happened to the guys who made Sniper Elite? That was a pretty awesome game and I wouldnt mind playing a sequel to that in a Crysis like setting.

    /Pipe dreams.

    This game needs a sequel as much as Rogue Warrior does.
  • Skurmedel #13 2 years ago

    KDR_11k: Yeah and ArmA 1 and ArmA 2 didn't do it very well either until the latest DLC, unless you used some mods.

    well...having the absolute certainty that this comment will make me come off as a total prick...i have to say that i read the article and my translation was: "well...we made a crap game....so next time well make a crap game with pretty graphics see if it gets better reviews".....am i the only one?

    @matrim83:

    You mean Rebellion?

    They're still around, having made Rogue Trooper, Rogue Warrior (although that was Rebellion Derby, formerly Core Design - as was ShellShock 2: Blood Trails), Alien Vs Predator, and a whole bunch of PSP games.

    They're currently working on NeverDead for Konami.

    Is it because Sniper was so bad its good, like Big Rigs.
  • sink257 #18 2 years ago

    Sniper Ghost Warrior wasn't bad at all, at least the PC version wasn't after they patched the crap out of it.

    As much as people complain about the sniper as a specific class in BC2 & MW in general it remains one of the most popular gameplay mechanics of modern military games.
    If City Interactive wanted to take this to the next level they should look to provide more options for customization in both single and multiplayer and invest in a solid story and gameplay - a game with much of the same won't give them the incremental sales they think it will and clearly from the reviews there's a lot to improve on.

    This is popular because people want to play a game as a sniper. People love snipers. What class do people clearly love in multiplayer? What was their favourite level on Modern Warfare?

    Why it took so long to make one I don't know. After the success of this however, there is no doubt loads of single player sniper games in production, so hopefully at least one will be a good game too.
