Gran Turismo 5 delayed again

In Europe "before Christmas", says Sony.

Update 2: The European PlayStation blog has tweeted that a new Gran Turismo 5 date will be confirmed "before the end of the month".

Update: Sony Europe has confirmed to Eurogamer that Gran Turismo 5 has been delayed in Europe, too.

Gran Turismo 5 will now be released here "before Christmas".

"We are sorry to say that Gran Turismo 5 will not be available on the previously announced release date of November 3rd, but the game will be released before Christmas," a statement read.

"We sincerely apologise to GT fans for the delay, however creator Kazunori Yamauchi and the team at Polyphony Digital want to make certain they are creating a racing experience of the highest quality.

"We are confident that this ambitious game will exceed expectations when it launches later this year. We'll have more information for you in the near future."

Original story: Sony has delayed Gran Turismo 5 again.

The racing game has been pushed back from a 2nd November US date. The US PlayStation blog assures us it will still arrive "this holiday season".

The Japanese release date has also been pushed back to "holiday 2010", according to a translation of the game's website.

    YOU ARE FUCKING JOKING.

Jesus H Christ Polyphony, someone needs to be sacked over this mess. Can't I just play it and you can patch it later? I'm getting pretty sick of waiting, you know?

    @Kinky_Mong

    Haha, like me!

I'm actually expecting Polyphony to push this to April 1st 2011, then when it comes around they'll announce they haven't actually been developing GT5 at all and everything you've seen up until this point were a load of mock-ups. April Fools, fuckers.

    They better fucking not.

Yeah neg me you cynically arrogant bottom feeding losers for being annoyed at one of my most anticipated games of the last three years being delayed.

How fucking predictable. Yeah, bring on the negs peons all because I got annoyed (and rightly fucking so) at the game being delayed.

There is no way they're going to break even over this game, no matter how well it sells. 5 years in development and a lot of wasted money behind it. Saw the supposed track editor earlier too, looks like you just specify how many corners you want and it makes it for you, hardly an editor now is it. What a disaster.By the way, i own a PS3 as well as an Xbox, and i was looking forward to this game originally. Years ago at least.

Lol. Maybe they have decided to add better rendering of the floor mats? The clunk sound of the driver's door isn't quite right? Perhaps they've decided that, in the interests of realism, they need to include a seatbelt minigame?

because its the closest thing PS3 has to a Duke Nukem Forever release fiasco. I was saying that for any game thats taking far longer than reasonable to be released just add forever onto the end of the title. Then everyone knows not to take any release date the publisher or developers give seriously.

There is no way they're going to break even over this game, no matter how well it sells. 5 years in development and a lot of wasted money behind it.

Er?Polyphony are a comparatively small team (100 people), and Prologue sold something like 5 million copies. If GT5 sells similarly (and chances are it will sell better - more PS3s now, more people interested in the full game, etc.), they will easily surpass in income what was necessary to pay a team and whatnot for 6 years.
  • andijames #51 2 years ago

Seriously can't they just release it and patch whatever needs to be done afterwards? Seems like what every other developer does these days! Mind you i'm not going to complain if it comes bug-free it's a rarity these days! Am curious to why it was bumped though? Albeit for a few weeks? Production problems?
  • DavoTheDiv #52 2 years ago

  • EVERYGAMER #53 2 years ago

Actually according to Wikipedia Duke Nukem forever was announced in 1997 and Gran Turismo was released in 1997 (In Japan) meaning Gran Turismo would have been announced say 2 years before allowing for an average developing schedule.

No, i don't think they will, factor in the cost of advertising, the cost of delaying it for so many years (paying staff for extra production time) and also the cost of the licenses (the WRC license for example) and GT5 will have been a hella expensive game to make, they won't break even iMO. Even Forza didn't i don't think, at least it wouldn't have made much of a profit.

It was unveiled at E3 2006... They're being put to shame by other Sony developers (as well as Nintendo and Microsoft devs) who have released several games in that time frame. For example we've had five games from Insomniac and the two Uncharted games from Naughty Dog since then.

Meanwhile Polyphony keep releasing screenshots with promises that it's coming soon... Sooner or later, you just have to release what you've got, the search for total perfection is futile.
  • NotSoSlim #79 2 years ago

I really believe GT5 has not been delayed. It just happens they have had to rewrite the whole game 3 times because someone at Polyphony is porn adicted, and keeps getting a virus in their computers which deletes the game files and replaces them with Tranny sex.

  • Raznilof #85 2 years ago

Some raise cost versus earned money....

If indeed (as stated) 100 people work at polyphony, they will likely earn somewhere between 4000/5000 euro's per employee per month (that includes taxes, utility, rent etc.). It's a rough guestimate.

    The maths:

    4000x100 = 400.000 burn per month
    400.000x12 months= 4.8 million burn per year
    4.8 x 6 years = 28.8 million development cost

Lets add an additional 5 million for marketing, promotion and round it off at 35 million euro's.

Lets guess some more and say they will earn 15 euro's per sold copy of the game.

If I did all the maths correctly, that amounts to 2.333 million copies, which is well below the 4 million mentioned earlier in this replies thread, which prologue sold.

Even if the people cost is twice what I used, it still makes a lot of sense for Sony and Polyphony to postpone till perfection. Again, only if any of the numbers used hold any truth. I was indeed lazy and didn't bother to look up the yearly research on average salaries for game developer jobs (I remember these numbers from a few years back). So take with a grain of salt as most of it is guessing.

But, even if they postpone another year at the above burn rates it makes sense, as it is intended to keep the franchise and the platform in the pole position.

And as much as I enjoyed (and loved) Forza, Gran Tourismo is still something special.

They'll get there in the end.

I don't know if this has been mentioned already, but could it be that Sony wants time to make sure its pirate proof? OPM have a review copy since last month and the review is expected to be published in 2 weeks time. It could be a minor delay, by a couple of weeks or something. Here's hoping anyway. If its pushed beyond 2010 then KY should seriously consider resigning for taking the fucking piss

It's got to be something small, either a piracy issue or they don't want stock shortages, or something to do with server/online issues. Hopefull it's a quick fix and a very small delay. I've expected GT5 delays for a long time but to delay it 3 weeks before supposed launch is a pisstake, especially when they then say a new date will be given at the end of the month. That's too long considering the game is supposed to sell 2 days later.

The rumour on GTPlanet is that the slippage is due to localisation (presumably languages), so if that is the case it is frustating but unavoidable. Personally, I think they are having to get rid of bloody flags, and they have to review 200 swatches to decide which shade of puce matches the burnt orange of the buildings in Sienna.
  • admj83 #94 2 years ago

  • geeza2020 #95 2 years ago

I like to think that the delay is due to Kazunori Yamauchi losing his marbles and the team at PD are desperately trying to get him to finish the game. But he's locked himself in his Toyota Supra (or whatever car he's got) and is just listening to Gary Newman's "Car's" and is refusing to come out.

Probably something boring like bugs or something though.

  • bluetoothion #102 2 years ago

I think there must be another very serious reason for this.... imagine after so long to release something with a major flaw... Gt6 would not be released because Yamauchi would perform harakiri ( or whatever its spelled )

i doubt its about coinciding with another either i thing there is lot of people that pre ordered, pre calculated the cost without knowing the actual release date ( who does really ) ( could sue PD for lost of interest rates had they put money in the bank for 5 years )
the anticipatioin lvl is way up there and they are two different types of game so its not every gamer they are targeting.

plus... sony's own child wouldn't be delayed over a third party;s release

First*, they announce it's in 3D. Then they announce only 'premium' cars will get proper interiors. Now, they announce another delay.

I really hope the end product doesn't turn into the videogame equivalent of The Phantom Menace.

    * order may be wrong due to my brain going mad cow
  • Raznilof #106 2 years ago

@darkmorgado, I did think of that and it is included in the salary (that's why it is so high).

But you are right of course and it wasn't intended as an accurate assessment. All I wanted to show was that the assumed vast difference between cost and what the game will earn, is likely to be not as spectacular, even if you where to double my used numbers.

Seriously what the fuck? Are they just all sat wanking all day or something? It's the only fucking explanation.
  • MasterNameless #116 2 years ago

    @Raznilof

Nice try working out the dev costs, but there was a "Top 10 most expensive games" article a little while back, estimating the production costs for GT5 at $80 million. Considering the extra delays since then I imagine it'll be a little more than that by now too.

    [link url=http://www.digitalbattle.com/2010/02/20/top-10-most-expensive-video-games-budgets-ever/
    ]http://www.digitalbattle.com/2010/02/20/...[/link]

Have they really earned that back with the 4.65 million(highest estimate I could find) copies of GT: Prologue already? I'm sure they've earned a good portion back from it, and they will probably get the rest back when they finally release GT:5.
  • NewbieZilla #117 2 years ago

If you didn't see this coming, you are a moron.
  • MasterNameless #118 2 years ago

Interestingly, GTAIV's dev costs with 1500 staff was only $100 million, compared to GT5's 80$ million with 100 staff...
  • Beano #119 2 years ago

  • NewbieZilla #120 2 years ago

Seriously. The attitude to take with someone reknowned for delays is to believe it when you see it on the store shelves. Gullible morons, I say, again.
  • adofessex #121 2 years ago

Maybe they are busy working on the 360 port? :p
  • JohnnySixShooter #122 2 years ago

    This is outrageous!
  • darkmorgado #123 2 years ago

Interestingly, GTAIV's dev costs with 1500 staff was only $100 million, compared to GT5's 80$ million with 100 staff...

Licensing fees, creating a custom game engine just for one game (the GTA4 engine has been used in other games), endless rendering and re-rendering due to obsessive perfectionism, lots of flights out to real locations to ensure track accuracy, car accuracy, meetings with car manufacturers, the costs associated with testing and re-testing the driving model....

As a general rule, the more realistic you are striving to be, the more expensive the process.
  • TopKatt #124 2 years ago

Why is it always the fanboys who are the first to start calling people fanboys in these threads?
  • Invisible_Cow #125 2 years ago

From what I've seen, this is seriously not going to be worth the wait.

For everyone wondering what they've been doing with the money: as much as I'd like to think they spent it on high-class prostitutes, the sad fact is that they probably just have a high burn rate and a load of incompetent/directionless managers. Just like Duke Nukem Forever, in fact.
  • waggy79 #126 2 years ago

What the hell can they be doing to it now? More interested in Hot Pursuit now anyway.
  • Goodfella #127 2 years ago

    @fable3

Meanwhile, PS3 owners have been Heavy Raining, God of War III'ing and soon to be Gran Turismo-ing.

Your argument (if you can call it that) fails.

  • Huddy #128 2 years ago

    Oh dear.

This game better live up to it's billing or the world's going to go nuclear.
  • telboy007 #129 2 years ago

  • TheTrueSpin #130 2 years ago

  • DjFlex52 #131 2 years ago

    @Goodfella

All year we've been hearing about how the PS3's exclusives will outshine the 360's exclusives. Now that Socom 4, LBP2, DC Universe, GT5 & FFXIV are all delayed this year, you have to resort to two 1st Q PS3 games to counter...tsk tsk.

Bayonetta (cause PS3 Bayonetta sucks), ME2, Splinter Cell, Alan Wake, Metro 2033, Crackdown 2, Limbo, Castlevania HoD, Monday Night Combat, Dead Rising: Case Zero, Halo Reach, Fable 3 all say "hi Goodfella" ;)
  • TrevSkyline #132 2 years ago

It's like anything you wait YEARS for.

First, the anticipation of the wait...then its here...wow...this is...good....then a month, two months go by - was it worth the long delay? Will we be all thinking, it was something "special"?

I honestly don't think it will be worth the years of waiting, I have to admit I am excited about GT5 but unless it's mind blowingly amazing, it really won't be worth it.

I fear a mass PR stunt on Sony's behalf.
  • man.the.king #133 2 years ago

It's really telling when the majority of posters in a thread about a PS3 exclusive are 360 fanboys.
  • OldK1ngCole #134 2 years ago

    Official Statement From Sony :

We've decided to postpone the release of Gran Turismo 5 as it didn't make it to Number 1 in the Eurogamer Expo Top 10. Until this is corrected and Gran Turismo 5 is crowned Number 1 we won't issue a new release date.

/Not an actual official Sony statement.

To be honest, I was alittle unimpressed by GT5 at the Expo. I thought the gameplay was bland and the 3D implementation was not the best at the show (I thought Killzone 3 and Motorstorm were much better).

    @DjFlex52

You're no better, listing exclusives to somehow feel better about your console is really quite sad and pointless.

Me, I've got both so I don't need to. My 'counter', as you put it was to merely state that the PS3 did have some fantastic exclusives this year but fable3 seemed to think otherwise.

The postponement is probably a result of the PsJailbreak hack.

Now that the PS3 firmware has plugged the hole, they probably want to monitor the situation for 6 months to ensure it remains secure and avoid the game suffering from piracy.

To be fair, it is not like they haven't released parts of GT games, or GT on PSP in the 5years of development. And by all accounts isn't F1 already doing a storming trade on Ps3 at the moment in that genre?

I'm sure Codies are grateful of a bit more breathing space to maximize sales of their game.
  • alcides #141 2 years ago

And the biggest facepalm award goes to... SONY for tripping themselves right before the Xmas finish line.

Frankly they could have had a stellar lineup with LBP2 and stuff... This is getting FUCKING WORRYING.

WHO THE FUCK do they have to SACK for things to work out as they should?
  • monkfishjoe #142 2 years ago

This is a real shame for people looking forward to this game. It seems ominous that they haven't released a new date yet...

I wonder how much polishing the game requires. There is this article from 2009 that said the game is 'feature complete' but just needs a polish:

  • Emmit_Assassin #143 2 years ago

"In Europe "before christmas", says Sony.

Yeah, which christmas is that then? 2014?

By the way, it felt extremely weird typing that date in.....even though its only a few years off, its like....the future, man. So spun out right now...and I aint even drinking.

  • coolbritannia #148 2 years ago

I wonder if Forza Kinect will get released before this?
  • Machiavellian #149 2 years ago

"Rational Side" Evidently if Sony decided to delay the game, then there is something serious enough that patching it would not be the best route. Have the developer take the rap or hit but it's probably something game breaking they found which mars the quality of the product enough to make taking a public slap in the face worth it.

Anyway if the game is going to be the definitive car game, then waiting a few months really not going to make a difference.

"Fanboy Side" Man, you think with the time spent on this game that such snafus would be found ahead of time. Expectations going to be rampant and little nitpicks will be escalated into huge issues where they wouldn't even dent the surface of another game.

    @Goodfella

Then I guess you're really quite sad and pointless too since you listed the PS3 exclusives first :D
So you have both consoles but you did need to, I see. You needed to counter fable3's fanboy rant. Oh please...tell me why?

We all know that you've picked your side regardless of you owning both consoles since I've never seen you criticize the PS3 game listers all year. I'd feel "better" if I was reaping some capital from MS's exclusives, though ;)

I play with all the consoles so your defensive argument is of no consequence to me.
  • pac666 #152 2 years ago

This really is getting a bit nuts.
  • darren1976 #153 2 years ago

With the amount of time in development if GT5 is not by far the greatest racing game ever then it will be very disappointing! I am now expecting the the best physics, best damage modelling, excellant AI, best graphics, the LOT!

Have just bought Fanatec PWTS so I use it on 360, PS3 and PC, all I need now is GT5 to come out! FFS, how many years has it been now? Forza 3 is a great game, F1 is a great game (if the patch works), all the numerous PC sims are great. But fuck me GT5 should be better than all of them purely on investment and development time!

Still be buying it cos my wheel and club sport pedals have cost a shed load (worth every penny!) but seriously I really am expecting to be blown away!

Goodfella is a PS3 fanboy in denial, he's a fully paid up member of the SDF. Me, I only own a 360 but I only play Reach anyway so couldn't care less.
  • busboy33 #157 2 years ago

    re: releasing before christmas.

And EG was told this by the same people that told us the last 472 release dates/windows/random guesses?

Did they pinky swear this time? It doesn't count unless they pinky swear.
  • TopKatt #158 2 years ago

I'm not gonna do a list, but 2010 has been a great year for the PS3 and 2011 looks set to be another good one as well. There's not as much on the horizon for the 360 but GOW 3 will be a day one purchase for me.
  • JBlokeUK #159 2 years ago

I swore I heard a major development like Polyphony person say about 2 months ago that GT5 will definitely, definitely, definitely be released on November 4th.

And I will definitely, definitely, definitely win the lottery this week.

At this rate my first child will get to play this before me, and my wife isn't even pregnant!

What ever the explanation is for this particular delay, there is no denying the fact that the people of PD are a bunch of amateurs.

I have a strong feeling that Sony will either sack KY and disguise it like they did with Ken Kutaragi or KY will resign anyway. There's a limit to perfectionism too. I really cannot see any publisher supporting a dev this much after constant delays. Wasn't it Take 2 that sued the previous devs of Duke Nukem Forever for not meeting deadlines? I mean, I know PD are owned by Sony, but I haven't seen Sony support any of their studios as much as they have PD. As much as GT5 will be awesome (despite what people say), I really think it would be a good idea for KY to leave the series.

I mean, if you watch his interviews from last year and the current year his health seems to have deterioated. Physically, he's much thinner and looks sleep starved. His dedication as admirable but he has to realise that if he wants to have the most up to date racing simulation possible you have to make sacrifices. There are a number of things KY could have left out with GT5 and the fans would be happy to have them patched in or in a later version. He could add new features for free if he's so loyal just like Criterion did with Burnout Paradise. The fans loved them for it. Surely stuff like 3D could be patched in. Surely?

I will still be buying GT5 whenever its out, mainly because I've exausted Forza. If it comes out shortly after NFS though, then it may have to wait. I've only time for one racing game in 2010.

LMAO. It's the next Duke Nukem Forever, along with Final Fantasy Versus XIII (which that has been in development since 2003; GT5 has been in development since 2004). Next, we'll be hearing about this game being delayed to Spring 2011, or even Winter 2011. :p

Plus it's also very embarrassing when you got Microsoft & Turn 10 releasing 3 Forza games (during 2005-2009) around the same timeframe in which it's taking Polyphony Digital & Sony just to make one GT game (2004-2010). All in a effort for "perfection" with better graphics & such. Haven't Sony learned that it's not the graphics that makes the game, but the gameplay? There's a reason why people have been playing & putting loads of hours into games like Halo on the 360. Because games like that are fun, & are not all about the graphics. Graphics can be the second greatest thing in a game, but the first thing that should always comes first is the gameplay.

Oh, AND there's news about another Forza game that may be coming out next year. Just very laughable at best.

Guess it keeps Polyphony in work for a few more weeks, if Sony has any business sense whatsoever they'll shut them down the day after release, they are beyond a joke.

The funny thing is the game still wont be as good as Forza!
  • VP1398 #170 2 years ago

Damn it. It's been a very long delay to play Gran Turismo 5. At least I will be busy playing F1 2010 and Asassin's Creed Brotherhood.
  • VP1398 #171 2 years ago

@GamerG. On the contrary, GT5 will blow Forza hands down.
  • Toadie48 #172 2 years ago

    Wow another delay :o.

Seriously though if your looking forward to playing Gran Turismo 5 don't be dissopointed with this latest delay because Shigeru Miyamoto said 'A delayed game is eventually a good game, a bad game is forever'. And this game has the possibility of being a triple A quality racing game :).
