Limbo team unveils its next project

Multi-platform release hinted at.

Playdead Studios, the developer behind hit Xbox Live Arcade platformer Limbo, has announced that it's working on a brand new IP.

The Danish studio's CEO Dino Patti told Joystiq, "I can't tell much, but I can tell you that if you liked Limbo, it'll definitely be for you. The gameplay style you'll really like. You'll feel it's the same team who made it, but everything will be changed."

Patti went on to explain Limbo was an Xbox exclusive because Playdead "used a lot of time and a lot of money" developing the game and he hoped it would help "get the money back."

There's a chance its next game might hit other platforms too though. "We are open for everything. To be honest, we want as many people to play our games as possible. If we end up going exclusive, we may do it for various reasons, but we just want as many people to play the game as possible."

Limbo was one of the highlights of this year's Xbox Live Summer of Arcade. Eurogamer's very own John Teti awarded it a glowing 9/10.

    "...if you liked Limbo..."

    Sold.

Not much of an unveiling, really, is it?

But does he mean with he 'hoped to get the money back'? Didn't they manage to get it back? That would be so unfair, Limbo deserved every penny they asked for it. And even more so when it will undeniably hit the arcade deal of the week in the future and sell for 800 MS points.

I mean, I for one, like to have an unique superb quality overall experience, although a bit short, rather then a lengthy not so good experience with several highlights which could easily be pushed in a much better shorter game. And I mean 15 euro's max (cheaper if you can get the points cheaper like I did) for a wonderful 4 hour experience (I took even longer because I felt like walking when I could and I often stopped to enjoy the scenery). If you spend 15 euros at a pub one night and do your best you can get a wonderful 4 hour experience as well, but that ain't expensive now is it?

Limbo as far as i know didn't sell as much as expected, Sadly creative Indie games don't seem to sell well on the xbox (zeno clash, darwinnia +)

The PC should be where these things are released first (not suggesting they shouldn't be released on other platforms) in particular through steam because indie games seem to have quite a good chance if they prove there mettle.

They stand a better chance of recuping costs to send to the other platforms this way.

Not quite sure what the Allure of "exclusive" holds anway. Anway Hope Limbo and the next venture come to pc or wii for my own selfish reasons.

Headless_Monkey_Boy: I rellay don't think that around 300 000 copies sold is bad number for this game...and yes this should go multiplatform, because its an awesome game and every gamer shoul play this art : )

    LowEnergyCycle: You're right, my words : )

Hopefully this next game will be multiplatform.

I have a 360, but prefer playing all my multiplats on my PS3, and reserve my 360 for exclusives.

I loved Limbo and looking forward to this. But I can't help thinking they would have made more money overall if it had been priced lower.

The game has sold 450,000 at £10 a pop. That's an enormous success, is it not? I know the developers won't get all the money, but surely the game didn't cost millions to make?

I'm willing to admit i got it wrong, i was sure i read something about it on this very site, or maybe ign. It was a while ago anyway. Maybe they were hoping to sell millions or maybe it was a slow burner. Maybe i dreamt it. :-S

guess i can confirm that i was tripping or something [link url=http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-09-20-limbo-won-xbla-summer-by-miles

"Limbo was an Xbox exclusive because Playdead used a lot of time and a lot of money developing the game and they hoped it would help get the money back."

    What?

Translation: we made it for the Box cause developing for DirectX is the quick-buck-way to go.

Please can someone port Limbo to PSN? I'll give you a cookie.
  • kinky_mong #14 2 years ago

If they're disappointed with the number it's sold they know what to do, drop it to a more reasonable 800 points.

Limbo was a seminal moment for a lot of gamers out there. I don't know ho many it sold exactly (anyone got reliable figures?) but it was never going to appeal to everyone, not instantly anyway. And if a game doesn't appeal instantly, casual gamers will drop it. And despite what we may think on sites like this, plenty of casual gamers own a 360 and play only football games etc.

Yes, Limbo was beautiful, massively original, and the gameplay was fantastic. In short, I and many others loved it, but I bet loads more were put off purely because of the monochrome visuals and minimalist soundtrack. Put it this way, I don't think Limbo 2 Kinect Edition is in Beta yet.

I sincerely hope Playdead made some decent cash on Limbo, but if they didn't, they still became a credible developer in the eyes of many, practically overnight. I think they have a very bright future.
