Story-based Mafia II DLC announced

Joe Barbaro gets his moment in the spotlight.

A story-based downloadable add-on for gangster game Mafia II will be released later this year, 2K Games has announced.

Joe's Adventures, the third Mafia II add-on, will be available to download from the PlayStation Store for PS3, Xbox Live Marketplace for Xbox 360 and... The internet for PC.

The player character is Joe Barbaro, Vito Scaletta's best friend. You assume control during the time Vito spends in prison. We're promised a "dramatic storyline" with "intense arcade-style" gameplay.

The DLC will open up several new areas in Empire Bay, including a train station, the cathouse, a boat yard, a lakefront and some new buildings. Sounds lovely.

New items are up for grabs, such as new clothing, collectibles and more classic forties and fifties music.

Optional city-based quests are the focus of the arcade gameplay. There's a points-based system that allows you to move up the ranks on the online leaderboard with combos and multiplier bonuses.

No pricing details were revealed.

Eurogamer gave the 2K Czech-developed title 4/10 in August.

If all this dlc was in the original game it wouldve done a lot better(in terms of reviews and sales). They couldve still released in time for xmas. bit sad really.

Why arcade style gameplay? Why not just normal story mode? Fucksake...

Really liked Mafia II, very enjoyable.

Arcade style gameplay will really add to the immersion of this story driven game...

I will be waiting for the game of the year version on this given all the comments on the lack of game content and the fact there seems to be a lot of DLC planned. It sounds to me like with all the planned DLC it will be a much better game overal.

Will the train station actually have a train then because I don't recall having seen one at all while I've been playing it? ;)

There again... there doesn't seem to be much demand for public transport in Empire Bay because no-one ever gets on the buses that are driving around either!

It was discovered in the PC files that 2K intend to flog Mafia 2 into the ground, stupidly I bought at launch so I will wait until they are all out and in a rather large discount in a Steam sale. Next time I'll wait for the Steam sales on their half games.

DLC sure is a real incentive to pay full price for a game. Not...

    (Still a brilliant game though)

    @glaeken

My thoughts exactly. Was waiting for this to be cheap but now they're adding DLC, if its released in a years time with all DLC for £30 or so then I'm in.

The Arcade style is more the points, as I played Jimmy's Vendetta add on and the cars handle just the same in simulation mode as they did in the main story, same with the shooting and such.
Says, it'll be the 3rd add on, I know Jimmy's Vendetta is one, what's the other?
  • BBIAJ #9 2 years ago

The Betrayal of Jimmy, which was/is a PS3 exclusive I believe.

i don't think i've seen a game with so much dlc right from the start. i wonder if they'll claim this wasn't cut out too?
  • hobojebus #11 2 years ago

It just sounds like its all really padded out with the driveing and the world not being very interactive, I was never gonna buy it full price but now seeing how they have the nerve to release this DLC and charge for it weeks after the games release when it should have been included from the start i'll just buy it used when its £10.

There seems to have been a bunch of stuff cut out according to this site.

    Thanks EG for the 4/10!
With every DLC announced the score is more and more justified.
  • makeamazing #14 2 years ago

@dingo, you know a review is about whats in a game, and not what was cut or could have been in the game :D... though i understand the point... it is a shame they cut all of this stuff and were able to release it so quickly, that suggests it wasnt even a polish/time to fix issue

@BBIAJ - I think you are right. Oh well.
I still think they should have let Vito roam around after the story was finished. Having fun with that in Jimmy's Vendetta, supercharing the cars and such. 30 cars in the garage (not including those you got when you pre-ordered), so a big difference from the 10 you were allowed in the main story.

Thought the game sucked, more cutscenes and driving than actual missions. Could have better watched scarface again.... with a keyboard on my lap, same effect....
  • metalangel #17 2 years ago

So what, are there areas of the city that you aren't allowed to access because you don't have the DLC? Fuck that. I was going to wait for it to be £20, now I'm going to wait even longer.

@Darren: I remember seeing a diesel train in some of the preview shots, and there's certainly an EL in the city (in the demo). If none of it works, that's a shame. The EL in the first game was both atmospheric and useful, as were the streetcars. Great fun to be had if you were being chased by the cops and managed to jump on one and watch out the rear window as they tried to keep up.

So I've run round as the tall square guy. Then I've caused mayhem as the tough bald guy. But why oh why do I want to run around as the lame joke cracking door holding fat guy!?

    Because it's Mafia II.

Oh right. That's me sold then!
  • Paperghost #19 2 years ago

@metalangel theres a train station with tracks and a bunch of (non moving) trains in there, you can get to it at any time (i only came across it by accident in the jimmy DLC).

theres also an entire Projects style section of the map, amazing to look at and entirely unused in the main game. theres so much cool stuff in that map, yet entirely pointless at present.
  • MadCaddy13 #20 2 years ago

What's with jimmys vendetta and jimmys betrayal? Arnt they the same?
And as for the 4/10, very very harsh indeed. I tend to buy only the good titles (8/10 or more, maybe 7) but that game should warrant at least a 7. 4 is if it's broken or buggy which it isnt
  • MadCaddy13 #21 2 years ago

What I hated about the game though was the fact you kept driving other peoples cars!! When Henry showed up I expected him to take us where we were goin but I got in the passengers seat and I moved to drive!! So I completely fucking totalled the thing.

The additions sound nice but I'm not really looking forward to playing as Joe, who is kind of a dumb fat ass...
