Hirai: PS3 sales "better" than expected

Wants 100 per cent of owners on PSN.

Kazuo Hirai, the overlord of PlayStation, has announced that global PlayStation 3 sales for this financial year are on track to reach 15 million.

"As of the end of August, sales look a bit better than we expected," Hirai told Reuters at the Tokyo Game Show.

They certainly were. PlayStation 3 has recorded an enviable 13 months of consistent growth in the US, and is the best selling console in Japan this year (Media Create sales data courtesy of NeoGAF).

That turnaround in sales was started by the PS3 Slim last year. However, we heard this morning that Microsoft's Xbox 360 Slim has sold even faster during its first three months in US shops. Can Microsoft's Xbox 360 stay globally ahead? As of the end of June, Microsoft had shipped 41.7 million consoles globally and Sony had shipped 38.1 million PS3s.

The battle, of course, will be epitomised by the head-to-head launches of PlayStation Move (tomorrow) and Kinect (10th November).

Hirai's also confident that the PlayStation Network and Sony's insistence of a 3D future will come into play. He told Reuters that 80 per cent of PlayStation 3s bought were hooked up to PSN, compared to Microsoft's 23 million Xbox Live users (as of January 2010). Hirai won't rest until 100 per cent of PS3 owners are online.

He also had another bash at Nintendo's 3DS. "We want consumers to enjoy 3D in the best possible environment," Hirai said. "At this stage, this is only possible on the big screen, with glasses."

That gap is getting narrower and narrower, it's only a matter of time before Sony overtake, they're a year behind too. ;)

"head-to-head launches of PlayStation Move (tomorrow) and Kinect (10th November)."

    Not really "head-to-head launches" then.
  • Lord_Gremlin #4 2 years ago

That's understandable. My PSN store purchases cost me more than console itself. And they are all worth it. Except for maybe Savage moon - too hardcore.

Also, what do you mean shipped? How many consoles are there, I mean functioning? Considering RROD should we assume real number of X360 is around 20 millions?

P.S. Is this site full of xbots or that's my foolish imagination?

PS3s rebranding, the launch of slim, and the influx of AAA core games have contributed towards Sony's success.

Well done, I plan to add to those sales pretty soon.

"@woodnotes: and real number of PS3s should be around 34 millions then."

Really? I've had the RROD twice, but on both occasions Microsoft sorted it free of charge, clearly not counting towards console sales. I got the YLOD on my old phat PS3 but Sony wouldn't touch it, so I had to buy a Slim to replace it.

To say that 20 million+ of Xbox 360s have been sold as replacements is every bit as much fanboy fodder as the stuff you are saying you don't like.

@woodnotes: Where do you live? In many countries when your 360 RROD you just have to buy a new one. They have actual support only in USA as far as I know.
A single example proves nothing. I know a person who bought - actually bought - 5 X360 consoles (3 had RROD and one broke in some other way, I didn't ask for details). Does this mean everybody does that? No.
  • TheApologist #13 2 years ago

Kinnect vs Move means very little IMO.

Different hardware, different experiences, different launch dates etc etc
  • woodnotes #14 2 years ago

    @LG

    In the UK, m'Lord.

You coming to hunt me down? Actually in most European countries the support is identical. You fill out the form on the Xbox web-site, take your 360 to the local UPS depot (or get it collected), it goes to Germany and you get it back a week later.

Live in the UK, two RRODs same console both fixed for free - last one was out of warranty. But that is not important. What is important is I hate the fact everyone is raving about motion control and 3D when all I want is funky games to play!

  • dsmx #18 2 years ago

Failure rate on xbox 360's did used to be roughly 33% so worse case scenario around 14 million xbox 360's are replacements, real figure will be nowhere near that number. Still even if 7 million were sold as replacements the PS3 still has a lower failure rate so the ps3 could actually be ahead in active systems in use, but we will never know for sure.
  • Nighthawk_08 #19 2 years ago

    Xbox 360 launched nov 16th 2005. As of June 30th 2010 sold 41.7 million.
    Playstation 3 launched nov 11th 2006. As of June 30th 2010 sold 38.1.
So it's taken roughly 4.7 years for xbox to sell 41.7 million. Ps3 roughly 3.7 years to sell 38.1 million. My guess would be that when the xbox 360 was 3.7 years old it hadn't sold 38 million units. Iv no doubt that ps3 will take over xbox 360 but that doesn't mean much except to fanboys. They've both sold awesome and both consoles are brilliant. I'm gutted I ain't got a 360 anymore cause I can't play reach. We're all winners in my opinion
  • Golgo #20 2 years ago

100% of owners on PSN? Give em a reason, then. The software download lineup is woeful compared to Live. (And no, I haven't got a 360). Get us the Caves and Treasures, dammit! Live is getting Radiant Silvergun...
  • Rodster #21 2 years ago

It's pretty sad that only 80% of PS3 users are on PSN when it's given away for free and that's probably due to PSN not being very good for MP games.

Yesterday I went to a 3D-HDTV retailer and watched a demo on a 3D TV. It's not bad but wearing glasses ruins it for me.
  • peterfll #24 2 years ago

Oh Hirai, bless you my love, you might look a right silly-billy in 12 months after the 3DS has been released going on past - but very recent - history i.e. the DS and Wii have first place in the sales record of this generation.

Not to mention that 3D with glasses is polarising (haha I made a funny) opinion with most people.
  • Machiavellian #25 2 years ago

Well if the 360 slim continue to see like it has not to mention the release of some of MS (believed) console selling titles, it probably would take the PS3 another 4 years to match the 360 and probably 5 to overtake. By that time, even the fanboys will probably not care since we should be on the new hotness.
  • 00.00.01 #26 2 years ago

    @Rodster 16/09/10
So...the other 20% have tested the free PSN services and decided never to come back? Or is the current 80% connected just because it's free?
Sorry mate but your argumentation is poor. To think that PSN is of influence on your MP experience. Ever tried it, tested it? The ISP is responsible for poor bandwith and therefore the 'poor' MP experience. Not PSN.
  • M_of_the_sys #27 2 years ago

Uh oh. The ultimate MS fanboy has arrived.
  • Machiavellian #28 2 years ago

12 months warrant in the states for the PS3.

Personally I have experience both YLOD on my 60GB (launch) PS3 which bit the dust a week ago. I already have two PS3s in my house so not going to pay Sony 150 not including shipping and tax to fix it. I will take it apart and see if the reflow technique works.

I experience the BROD on my 80GB after 6 months but it was still in warranty so all was good.

I can definitely attest that the PS3 does have it's failure, definitely not on the order of the 360 but in my household, I have had my 360 RROD twice (Launch) so the PS3 and 360 is par for the course as far as failures in my home.

We could continue the argument on whether the xbox figures are bias because of failure rate, or PS3 figures are bias because of those who wanted a blu-ray player.

I own both, love both... but tend to play on xbox most. Why, because my friends are on there!

All we need to know is that games business is doing great, Sony and Xbox are both reporting an increase and the Wii is finally starting to slow down.... wooot. Time for Nintendo to shake things up all over again, because unlike many I'm actually ready for a new generation of consoles.. and no the Move and Kinect do not bloody count!! :-P
  • Goodfella #34 2 years ago

It's not fiction. The PS3 failure rate is huge. Among my friends, the failure rate is 100%

Your one imaginary friend doesn't count.

Seriously dude, you're making a fool of yourself on this web site. If your going to spout drivel at least try and back it up with some cold, hard facts instead of isolated personal incidents.

You sir are a fanboy of the highest order and you give gamers a bad name. • Spekingur #46 2 years ago

I know a couple of people who have had a YLOD and one other that has had a BR drive problem with their PS3. They did not get replaced by Sony. One of the YLOD machine was still in warranty with the store where it was bought and in the end it got replaced by the store itself. These are the only PS3 problems I have had some personal experience with. Other than these aforementioned problems the PS3 has been a rather good machine amongst my friends, family and associates.

Saying that PS3 doesn't break is a bit naive.

I think when it comes to considering how successful the PS3 has been you just have to look at this from a playstation brand point of view. Last generation they had something like 100 million lead. This generation its virtually 50/50 market share (not counting the Wii of course).

So although the PS3 is in no way doing badly measured against going from complete market dominance in the last generation to being roughly equal with their number 1 competitor is in no way a great performance. If you take into account the reliability problems of the 360 you really do have to wonder how Sony have managed to piss away their lead.

Of course a lot of the problem was launching so late after the 360 as if you wanted an HD console you only had one choice for quite some time. Sony really should have pulled out all the stops to get the PS3 out much sooner than they did and I think that would have helped them greatly. Instead they just seemed to think it would be another Dreamcast situation where them telling everyone their new product would be far better than the 360 was enough.

Sony need to ditch the XMB obsession and integrate PSN more fully into the frontend of the UI, I hate the way it launches app-style into the store and the more content you add to your PS3 the more cumbersome and irritating XMB becomes (even though it looks neat!).
  • Goodfella #58 2 years ago

All I can do now is laugh, it really is very amusing. I'd love to know if it's one big wind up or tigerstyle actually does have psychological issues?

Back on track, lets not forget in the PS2 'glory days' they didn't have that much competition that time round. I think Nintendo had become a bit arrogant with their success, and while the Gamecube was still a financial success it was far from what they hoped compared to previous consoles. MS were new to the game so the Xbox was an unknown quantity.

This time round Sony have had very stiff competition and being last out of the gate nad having the more expensive hardware hasn't helped a great deal.

All that said though it's very close between Sony and MS, Nintendo sales seem to be waning too.

Goody if Sony can attract 100% PSN, but wonders about 20% turning down the free offer? As EVEN BD players are going online for firmware or BD content updates. So there are other issues at play here that may give reasonings why 100% may be a tall order?

Yawn re pissing contests, got both and yes Sony from 1st place to being behind for almost half of PS3 life, so next gen I m sure Sony going to have a lot more respect on how tough it us to be in 1st place and works even harder.

It doesn't have the bells and cross-game invites of XBL but it's free so I don't expect the same service.

Anyway, after some games retail experience I would put the ps3 failure rate at about 25%-35%, mostly 40gb, then 60's. And the xbox's at 45%-50% pre jasper chip-set.

However the MS warraenty is far better than SCE's, so I would imagine the 20% of PS3s that don't connect are mainly made up of un-replaced faulties. So 100% may be ambitious!!
Also consider jail breaks and out of net connection range mahcines.

I seriously doubt sony planned to go from #1 to #3, maybe they did but that is a terrible business plan

As of the end of June, Microsoft had shipped 41.7 million consoles globally and Sony had shipped 38.1 million PS3s.
Shipped does not equal sold (to consumers).

I love the RROD thing that people like to mention to try and knock down the 360s sales. Presumably so they can sleep well at night knowing that more people play the PS3.

Now I'm not saying it isn't true, but the Sony fans out there need to chose their poison:

If the 360 has got less actual live systems than the PS3 (due to RROD) then the attach rate for the 360 is even higher than its already high figure.

    OR

The 360 really does have more live systems than the PS3 and your X Millions of RROD replacements thing is BS.

Which will it be, YOU decide.... ;)
