UK chart: Mafia II untouchable on top

RUSE, Spider-Man, Kingdom Hearts arrive.

Mafia II has once more topped the UK all-formats chart and taken its tally to three consecutive weeks.

Tom Clancy's HAWX soared from 10th into second thanks to the release of a PS3 SKU: a move which pushed previous second-place holder Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days to third.

There were completely new entries in the top 10 this week. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions was the highest of them in sixth, PSP game Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep was seventh and RUSE was eighth.

Filling out the rest of the top 10 were Toy Story in fourth, Tetris Party Deluxe in fifth (up from 23rd), Price of Persia: The Forgotten Sands in ninth and Red Dead Redemption in 10th.

Great news for Mafia (I will get soon, I promise ;)
Looks like we will get a 3rd game, that will do for me.
    Well done chaps.
  • ChuckNorris #3 2 years ago

Bought Mafia after being cautious at first because of the EG review. After playing it for quite a while I must say that imo it's as bad as I initially feared it would be. The characters are dull without exception, the city is empty and soulless and the missions are boring as shit. Two games this gen I really regret getting are Mafia II and FarCry2. They are both terribly unintresting.

    Edit: typO

@ being negged. I'm sorry if I offended anyone by not liking the same game that you like. It was in poor taste

Mafia 2 is a great game and looks like a lot of people agree?? Makes Eurogamers piss poor review score of 4/10 look even more of a joke!!

There ain't no party like a Tetris party 'cos a Tetris party don't stop.
  • bad09 #6 2 years ago

I had major, major computer malfunctions this week and lost my save for Mafia2 on chapter 11 :( Still I get to start it all over again with a nice new card \o/

MAfia 2 is awesome and EG are silly, it deserves the top spot :)

What is the price of Persia?

Seems one or two people may not feel that your reviews completely control their purchases EG. Or maybe everyone is an idiot except you and @ChuckNorris...

ps. Nice GetGames Mafia II advert at the top of the page. Consider your integrity preserved.

pps. I have nearly forgiven you for the Mafia 4/10 based on your Lair of the Shadow Beroker review... ;-)

I'm glad to see Mafia 2 doing well, I think it's a damn good game. After playing a fair amount of the DLC it's pretty obvious Take2 were rather silly not to include it in the original release though, the original game had Freeride and Freeride Extreme to give you more to do and them nickel and diming their customers with it is a bit poor.

As for next week I predict there's absolutely no chance of it being number 1 for some reason.

Mafia 2 is great and deserves twice the score that EG gave it (the PC version at least, and provided you have a gamepad on hand - or have a weird, extremely masochistic fetish for driving with keyboard input).

While certainly flawed and probably not all it was originally planned to be, it remains my third best gaming experience of 2010 behind ME2 and RDR. Well, fourth best if you count the new, utterly amazing ME2 LotSB DLC as a standalone experience.
  • ChuckNorris #11 2 years ago

    @Moribundman

Eh? I'm one of those that let EG dictate my purchases?

Well if that were true I would have been better off as it turned out, as the game clearly was not for me. I'm not a drone that mindlessly stares at scores and gets all upset about a number. What made me cautious was the content of the review and I was stupid enough to let people who do enjoy it to influence me. And if they do enjoy it, that's ok, it's fine and I'm glad that they do. But that does not make my experience with the game any better or more specifically, it doesn't make what I precieve as an empty dull game world come more alive.
  • Spekingur #12 2 years ago

Mafia 2 is not that great of a game - seeing it is supposedly a free-roam game. It also over-promises what it is.
A free-roam game should not have a linear storyline (as in, putting you in a mission right after you finish the one before, plus no side-missions) and it should have things to do whilst free-roaming.

That said, it looks really well and I love the environment the story happens in.

  • Mcstrife #14 2 years ago

    Mafia 2 is nicely marketed.

It is also a poor game.
  • menage #15 2 years ago

Heavely promoted stuff M2. So not surprising, seeing as the rest available is even more crap (I mean HAWX at 2 is clearly a sign there's fuck all to play at the momentl).

Can't wait till the end of September. When the good times start rolling.

  • ryohazuki1983 #16 2 years ago

Shame to see Metroid other m slip to 40 from an opening week off 12th!

    Such a great game :(
  • CaptainKid #17 2 years ago

    And rightfully so.
Started playing the game yesterday and played it for 7 hours straight.
And I normally don't play single player.

It isn't the best game by any stretch but its damn good fun.
  • danathjo #18 2 years ago

A PSP game in the top ten? Shirley it's a mistake?
  • thefold #19 2 years ago

Is it just me, or is there a lack of Starcraft 2 in these charts?
  • SL33PY #20 2 years ago

I'm happy to see that consumers continue to kick the original Eurogamer review
  • PlugMonkey #21 2 years ago

" Is it just me, or is there a lack of Starcraft 2 in these charts? "

I think these charts are still just 'highstreet retail' aren't they? Or have they now taken a bold step into the 21st century?

@bad09: What? Leave the puppy alone, you bastard! :o

I'd suggest RUSE to anyone who likes RTS games, it is rather challenging on the highest difficulty. Also, Company of Heroes Online is in open beta, nice game.
  • makeamazing #24 2 years ago

I see RE5 Gold edition has come back into the charts on its re-release (its been re-released for PS3 and Xbox), but i guess most sold were because of move.

Ah with M2 still high in the charts, guess its not going to drop in price any time soon, guess i am going to have to get it by the end of next week at this rate (me doesnt have the patience to hold out much longer).
  • 5h1nj1 #25 2 years ago

2Spekingur: Just to be sure that you understand it correctly, cause it seems you have kind of a misconception there:
Mafia 2 was NEVER meant to be a free-roam game. It was NEVER promoted as a free-roam game of any kind. Especially if you see a free-roam game as a sandbox game. Mafia 2 is a story driven game. It is supposed to be linear. That's how it works.
Stop blaming a weasel for not being a badger, please.

    Calm before the storm.
  • Silent-Hal #27 2 years ago

Valkyria Chronicles 2 is nowhere to be seen I see. It'd be a shame if the sequel were as overlooked as the first one.
  • Osmond #28 2 years ago

Good, just completed mafia2 , so hopefully because its still in big demand, i will get a decent trade-in price towards halo reach in the morning. M2 is better than eg's 4 no doubt but still a big disappointment , especially with all the years in development.
  • Osmond #29 2 years ago

"It was NEVER promoted as a free-roam game of any kind. Especially if you see a free-roam game as a sandbox game."

Dont tell me the average gamer didnt think mafia 2 would be a GTA type game set in the 50's. The previews did say it would be linear yes, but even i wasnt prepared for how on the rails it would be. (the prison mission was terrible for this). I think the devs know that if most buyers knew, it wouldnt have any open world trappings whatsoever it sales would be far less.
  • 5h1nj1 #30 2 years ago

A gamer, who thought Mafia 2 will be a GTA type game, is an ignorant one. Yes, I know, there is a lot of those (even some of the reviewers)...
Notice that I don't say it's a great game. I don't think it is. But the aforementioned "misconception" is baffling.
What you're saying is that the devs deliberately made an impression of a GTA type game to help the sales? O_o Really? Something like that never crossed my mind. I don't remember any info from them which would point in that direction. I also don't think they would need something like that after the supersuccessful Mafia 1 which (suprise!) also was not a gta type game. :)

  • Spekingur #31 2 years ago

@5h1nj1: It is quite easy to make that misconception. You see a city with people walking along, you drive a car around this city and shoot guns. That is basically what you did in GTA/Saint's Row/Godfather. Putting the equal sign between these two is easier than you might think. And it is free-roam. Since you can do that "in between" missions (as in whilst in a mission but either before or after you have finished the main part of it).

I played Mafia I, and I loved it. I was hoping for more than basically just an upgraded Mafia I in Mafia II, that is all.
Heck, it even has these hints of a free-roam game - i.e. stores and places you can drop of a car to get money. Silly of me thinking that this might have possibly been a far greater game if it had been of the (proper) free-roam nature.

I'd like to point out that GTA is also a story driven game. It just gives you the choice of when to do the story and allows you to "do other stuff". That is something that Mafia II should have done. Games of this nature have moved on and innovated (if you can call it that) since the days of Mafia I. It kind of feels like backwards somehow, lots of missed opportunities.

I'm not saying that Mafia II isn't a fun game. I just don't think it is a great game. I love the era and the cars. I like the firefights for the most part, story is somewhat enjoyable as well. The replayability is nil though.

Good to see Mafia 2 do well despite the ABYSMAL EG review.
  • EthanWoods #33 2 years ago

    @Osmond

Or, y'know, people could research what they buy. Just a crazy thought.

I'm still waiting for John Teti to find me those developer interviews where they said (in a few more words than this) that they wanted to make a GTA-esque game.

quote: "I love the era and the cars. I like the firefights for the most part"

I totally agree with that. :) I also really like the look of the city, the complexity of it. It's actually fun only to drive through it (at least in highres on max settings in the PC version).
  • Spekingur #36 2 years ago

Yes, that's why it is a bit of a letdown that the game doesn't have more to do in this world other than just the missions. There is a chance for a lot of side-missions or mini-games, such as racing, shooting gallery, taking someone out, etc. They even say there are diffirent gangs in the city so they even could have had somekind of dynamic gang war. There is just so much untapped potential with Mafia II which could have resulted in a higher (or any) replayability that one has to wonder what kind of development or publishing decisions were taken with the game.
  • Osmond #37 2 years ago

    @5h1nj1

I think mafia 2 is the only game thats totally story driven but set in an "open type world" ever made. I cant think of another but what i really think happened is the devs didnt have the skill, budget to make the world free roaming or they made a seriously bad decision and thought mafia2' structure would actually work. Seeing an advert of the game any person watching would have thought its a GTA4 style title with loads of side missions and freedom.
  • 5h1nj1 #38 2 years ago

You can't know that from an advert. That's nonsense. But enough of that.
I agree, the devs made some bad decisions about the game's structure.
But it works for people, seeing the game is actually a bestseller right now, so it's kinda hard to blame them. For what? That they make good profit?
