Need for Speed MMO turns free

Celebrates one million users.

Racing MMO Need for Speed World has zoomed past the one million registered users mark.

And so happy does that make creator EA, that all charges for the game have been dropped. Specifically, the free client that allowed career progression up to level 10 but no further: that's been unlocked - you can play for as long as you like.

However, there are still micro-transaction items like double XP bonuses and power-ups available to buy.

Need for Speed World launched at the end of July. Check out the Eurogamer review for our verdict.

Is it still forcing steering wheel owners to park their shiny Logitech G25s and other wheels in a corner, while we resort to the preposterous task of playing a racing game with keyboard input?
I spent exactly three minutes in the beta test because of that stupendously braindead omission, and I read later that it apparently still applied to the release version.

Hell, at that time in the beta the controller options menu was entirely grayed out, so you couldn't even use a gamepad without using third party control mapping software.

I can't believe Eurogamer gave this a 6 by the way. Just for being able to use a 360 controller without any hassle on the PC version, Mafia 2 was a much better driving game :) (I just started playing Jimmy's Vendetta - it's great to be back in Empire City, in car or on foot).

Free? I paid £15 for it to go free 2 months later? I feel a little hard done by.

Yes, we all know insanely popular games go FTP immediately because, you know, devs just don't like to recoup their costs!

I'm almost certain I tried my wired 360 controller when I loaded up that beta (must have been around two months ago, although don't hang me up on that, I'm terrible at keeping track of time), and just like my Logitech G25 the game didn't register it.
I visited the official forums afterwards looking for answers, and other beta testers were making the same complaints (although apparently both wheel and controller had worked, and the controller options been available, in some previous beta phases).

Well, in any case, if it works now in the release version, at least that provides an acceptable option for the majority of the potential players - although for me quite a few arcade racers over the years have benefited just as much as racing sims from a force feedback wheel, assuming the implementation is decent, and it has been in several NFS games (Shift is obvious, but also I also remember playing the Underground games with one of my older Logitech wheels years ago).

After the BFHeroes debacle, I'm not even going to try "free" EA games.

I'll not spend 1p on this until they allow CONTROLS TO BE CUSTOMISED.

Fucking hell. I remember exactly why I fucked off PC gaming 10 years ago. Waste of fucking download, update and install time.

Because of the 1 shitty PC game in 10 years where you can't customise the controls?

(Something which is a standard feature of PC games, and very rarely exists in console games?)
