Plants vs. Zombies on XBLA tomorrow

Introduces seedy multiplayer.

PopCap's puzzle tour-de-force Plants vs. Zombies will be released tomorrow on Xbox Live Arcade.

There's no mention of a price just yet, but we do know the Xbox 360 version of the game gains multiplayer. Either you and a friend can fight off zombies co-operatively, or one of you can play as the fauna and one as the undead.

Plants vs. Zombies is PopCap's best game to date. And considering the rest of the portfolio, which includes Peggle and Bejeweled, that comment can't be understated.

Christian Donlan assessed the original PC release of Plants vs. Zombies in February this year.

400 points too expensive. A lot of people have already bought and played this so 1200 points just for multiplayer is not a good deal.
  • mungolikebeans #3 2 years ago

Will this be added to iphone/pad versions...?

  • GaryHoward #4 2 years ago

Well, it does have extra features compared to the PC version and is aiming at a new audience that might not have it on PC and so they can buy it on XBLA. No harm in expanding is there? It's already on the Iphone/Itouch. Yes, 1200msp is a bit steep and becoming an XBLA game default price point now, but I'm still going to buy it and support PopCap by upping their sales revenue. And the fact Plants vs Zombies is just plain awesome!
  • metalangel #5 2 years ago

I'd say most XBLA titles cost 400MSP too much.
  • richarddavies #6 2 years ago

Good game. It's just a shame it's cheaper on pretty much every other thing you can buy it on. Really unnecessary price.
  • systems #7 2 years ago

1200 points! Screw that. Great game but I've done it on Steam and if I buy it again it will be for a touchscreen device.
  • X #8 2 years ago

As others have said, I don't think i'll be able to go for it having played the iPhone version now for quite a while. I'd probably have been the same if I'd bought Peggle first on the handheld before XBLA but gladly it was 800 points anyway. Think i'll wait for a DOTW.
  • TruWari3r #9 2 years ago

Anxiously waiting, love me some PvZ.
  • darkmorgado #10 2 years ago

At 800MSP this would have been an instant purchase.

At 1200, I think I'll pass unfortunately. I was really looking forward to it but I don't like how MS seem to think that nearly everything these days should be 1200msp as standard.
  • Whitster #11 2 years ago

Add me to the list of would have brought again @ 800, not gonna buy again @ 1200 punters.
  • randompanda #12 2 years ago

Of all the ways to use "seedy" in a pun and you went with that?
  • Eraser #13 2 years ago

Already spent €10 on it for the PC version through Steam so I too think 1200MSP is too much for me.
  • kentmonkey #14 2 years ago

Another to the list. If it's a brand new project developed entirely for the 360, then I can see why it may need a higher price tag to justify the costs. But when it's a port of something already released which, despite costing for the development of the port, doesn't carry the same costs as a new title in terms of concept, artwork, project management, etc. and is often cheaper elsewhere, I find it very hard to justify this sort of price.

800 points I would have paid, 1200 points is too much. And it's not really out of a "I can't afford £4 more" situation, more of a "it's my shallow and almost certainly doomed to fail way of showing my discontent with the current pricing structure".
  • lockload #15 2 years ago

Co-op play, multiplayer id say thats worth 10 pounds
  • Paperghost #16 2 years ago

another vote for "stupidly expensive". shame.
  • chasejamie #17 2 years ago

Bought and loved for my iPod touch, but 1200 points is just too much. There's been so many great games at the 400 and 800 mark to justify why this should be 1200.
  • sanctusmortis #18 2 years ago

I'll buy it, for the third time, next time I buy points. Just like Peggle, in fact.
  • Stroller4 #19 2 years ago

Hmm. No longer an insta-buy at 1200mps. The new maps that they brought out a few weeks ago for Defense Grid (four pairs at 80msp each) represent much better value.
  • darkmorgado #20 2 years ago

What do you reckon folks, I have Defense Grid: The Awakening, is this essential?

It's a lot better than Defense Grid, IMHO. A lot more humorous, for starters (the help screen is written by a zombie and says "How to play the game: Let us get to your houze";). I would say it's essential, but not at this price. Pick it up on steam or iphone. Download the demo from Popcap to give it a try.

1200 is pretty obviously the new 800. Arse.
  • djjeny #22 2 years ago

Add me to the list of '400 points too expensive'. Shame on you, M$, shame on you.
  • coderkind #23 2 years ago

Isn't it PopCap setting this at 1200, not Microsoft?

I haven't played this on any platform yet, but I'm wavering at the high price too.
  • lucky_jim #24 2 years ago

    @coderkind- Microsoft sets the prices.

I hope this flops. Bit harsh on PopCap, but the only game with a less justifiable 1200 point price tag was that last Metal Slug one.
  • menage #25 2 years ago

Nice game, not something I would play again.
  • metalangel #26 2 years ago

Can't you play it for free (with ads) on Popcap's site? Or is that only Peggle I'm thinking of?
  • gjgjg #27 2 years ago

interesting to see how itlll work in the pad, i only completed it 5 times on PC so this will give it a nice twist:p
  • agparrot #28 2 years ago

I was all lined up to buy more points for an 800 point insta-purchase, but I'm certainly going to draw breath before going for it at 1200.

I'm not ruling it out, but... as others have said, it's a reworking with knobs on, not a brand new tour-de-force that needs to be priced at 1200 to recoup development costs.

Disappointed really, because I'm probably going to wait for the inevitable DOTW, too.
  • coderkind #29 2 years ago

@lucky_jim; how does that make sense? In that case a development house could spent millions developing a game only for Microsoft to decide to charge 1 Point for it.

I thought it'd be more the case that Microsoft take a cut of whatever price PopCap decided upon.
  • lucky_jim #30 2 years ago

coderkind, that's not just my opinion- it's not a secret or anything, Microsoft set the prices for XBLA games. Much to the annoyance of the developers of Zeno Clash and Darwinia, among others.
  • RobTheBuilder #31 2 years ago

800points or less = Must Buy
    1200 points = Rip off

    Simple equation Popcap/Microsoft.
  • coderkind #32 2 years ago

@lucky_jim; never realised this, thanks. Wasn't trying to call you mad or anything, only that doesn't make much sense to me :)
  • lucky_jim #33 2 years ago

Yeah it does put the devs totally at Microsoft's mercy. But usually the problem's the other way around to your hypothetical situation. Jonathan Blow wanted Braid to be 800msp because he didn't think people would pay more, Microsoft insisted on 1200 and fortunately for him it sold gazillions. Introversion wanted Darwinia to be 800, MS insisted on 1200 and it totally bombed to the point where they've said it if wasn't for Steam, they'd have gone skint. I imagine there's some discussion on it, but the final decision is Microsoft's.

1200 points is the new kid on the block and with XBL going from $50 to $60 a year in november, they can kiss my ass.
