Red 5 Studios unveils Firefall
It's a free-to-play online shooter.
Red 5 Studios, the company set up by former World of Warcraft team lead Mark Kern, has unveiled its first game.
Titled Firefall, it's described as "a team-based action shooter that thrusts hundreds of players together into a lush, dynamic open world combining intense competitive multiplayer and large-scale cooperative gameplay".
The game is set 200 years in the future. In a bid to find a clean energy source called Crystite, a hostile energy storm known as the Melding is unleashed. With the planet all mashup, the surviving humans must band together to continue the species and fight against new, bloodthirsty race The Chosen.
You'll fight using customisable, high-tech battleframes and a class-based combat system. You can swap and trade as you go to specialise in your favourite style of play - whether that's stealth, support or direct attacks.
Firefall will be free to play and you won't have to pay for updates and add-ons. However, you will be able to buy "optional enhancements".
"When I founded Red 5, I knew I wanted to do something different than anything I'd done before," said Kern. "I wanted to take the best of what I learned making online games and bring that to skill-based shooters."
Firefall is due to arrive at the end of next year. To sign up for the beta, visit Firefallthegame.com.

@retrend
"Are there any additional details regarding the competitive multiplayer?
For now, we are only discussing the open-world co-op experience. You can expect to see a lot more about the muliplayer experience at a later date."
"Yep. We have two main goals: raise the bar on co-op (hundreds of players in open dynamic world) and build great support for competitive clan based armies, ladders, stats and tournaments (PvP) "
