Bungie to reset Reach Credits at launch

"It's nothing personal."

Credits earned by gamers before Halo: Reach's official launch will be removed, Bungie has warned.

Bungie will reset Credits earned and any gear bought ahead of the Xbox 360 exclusive's 14th September launch.

"Some of you are playing Halo: Reach a little bit early," communications man Eric Osborne wrote in Bungie's forum.

"It happens. With millions of copies out of manufacturing quickly making their way into the massive global retail chain, it's not terribly uncommon for a few discs to 'accidentally' slip into a few lucky customers' hands. Que sera."

Last month Reach was leaked onto torrent sites and newsgroups.

Microsoft responded by saying that anyone playing "any unauthorised title" was likely to have their account and console banned from Xbox Live. "We have ways of knowing," the console manufacturer said.

Now Bungie has issued its own warning to early birds.

"Any Credits you earn during this slim pre-Launch window are going to be summarily and systematically reset prior to launch," Osborne said.

"Don't get too attached to any fancy new gear you might have already acquired. Consider any expenditures or investments you've made in the Armory the cost of doing business early. It's nothing personal; we just want to make sure the playing field is kept nice and level upon launch. It's only fair."

Osborne also told gamers that Credits earned through offline play, while accelerated, will suffer a "reduction" when they go online.

"For players without a connection to the outside world, the system is simply accelerating the credits being awarded to allow them to experience the Armoury at a realistically achievable (but decidedly lonely) offline pace," he said.

"For those who opt for a more social experience, the grind is a little more protracted, but still profoundly fun."

Not long now.

Seems fair. Everyone starts on an equal playing ground.

When's this out again? Is it 14th or 24th? If it's 24th it can wait, what with Dead Rising AND Civilisation V out on the same day.

I like Halo, but not enough to get really excited over.
  • Yossarian #3 1 year ago

    14th. Tuesday week.
  • altitude2k #4 1 year ago

Good. Although will this affect those people who get the game the standard couple of days earlier than release, like Saturday?
  • AphoticCosmos #5 1 year ago

Good. Everyone should start on an equal playing field.

Surely nobody can have earned THAT many during the beta to actually work up a fuss about it?
  • LiveForever #6 1 year ago

Considering the unlocked equipment dose nothing to the gameplay this is pointless.
From my understanding of the beta its not like MW leveling up, its only for the look of the character.

Beta credits are already gone. This is for people who get the game early one way or another. If the game arrives on Monday, expect your credits to be wiped on Tuesday.

Eurogamer 10/10, and you can quote me on that.

I know, it's awesome, right! Everyone has access to the same abilities and the playing field is level! It doesn't matter if you've poured one hundred hours more into the game than the next guy! It's all balanced and it's all good!
  • Peew971 #10 1 year ago

I also dislike the leveling system in MW, it's just a matter of how often you can play even if you're shit.

Tuesday week, you say? Woohoo!! We'll soon have peace and quiet on CoD3 for a bit. School holidays ending reduced it quite a bit, but we've still got a lot of kids running around TKing and partaking in general fuckery because they are shit at the game.
  • darkmorgado #12 1 year ago

    @Yossarian cheers.

I think I'll wait for a bit for the price to drop. ODST and Halo 3 saw their prices drop like a stone within a couple of weeks. I bet this will be the same.

EDIT: Yes, in a month when I already have about 6 games to buy, it's such a terrible thing to not buy a Halo game on day 1, when I have never been that impressed with the series and when its titles have a habit to be at the £20 mark within a few weeks of release. Yes, such utter madness. The devs still get the same amount of money if I buy it half price in a "sale" as they do if I buy it for the full £40, you know.

Completed the campaign on Saturday night, it was epic. Visually, the game is stunning, but not consistently so - one or two areas look decidedly Halo 3, but in general the game is spectacular.

    It'll get a 10 at EG and a 10 at Edge.

I really want to know how this turns out. It looks a lot better than 3 but it's still Halo which doesn't realy feel that great to me with the nerf weapons an all.

Enough other games I suppose, but f@ck I really need some new games right now.

Stop doing the mid week releases please. What's wrong with a Friday? All it means is I have to trek down to the shops in limited lunchbreak to ensure a purchase and then have a crap week at work because I'm too bloody tired to do anything. I know it's a bit pathetic not to be able to hold off until the weekend but I'm afraid I'm just not capable.
  • darkmorgado #18 1 year ago

    @Tonassurus

I feel your pain mate. It's a bloody stressful nightmare to chug into town during my lunchbreak. It's made even worse by then having to spend the rest of the afternoon in the office with a shiny new game sitting on your desk.

For some reason, games have always traditionally been released on a Tuesday in the US, and simultaneous EU/US releases conform to this.

Well the US is just silly then : )
  • Fab4 #21 1 year ago

Maybe the day of release is related to when the charts are compiled.
  • gremly #22 1 year ago

    I foresee a 4/10....

Oh wait. It's a game the reviewer might actually play through

    Gasp!
  • Spydy #23 1 year ago

I was fortunate enough to play and complete it over the weekend. Plays great. It looks miles better than HALO3. Some areas look crappy, but for the most part it's excellent looking.

Some big game play surprises in there as well.
  • darkmorgado #24 1 year ago

    @Spydy

Is it better than Halo3? I was so disappointed with that. Never bothered to finish it. I killed the Covenant dude and then ran through a corridor filled with Flood after being betrayed by the overmind, but after that I was just "meh". I think I was right at the end of the campaign as well.
  • chrisjm #25 1 year ago

    eurogamers first ever 11/10?!
  • tachometer #26 1 year ago

They will also be limiting play time to one hour before tea, and half an hour before bedtime if you get your homework done
  • Deckard1 #27 1 year ago

whats going on... I'm actually excited for a halo game?!
  • coolbritannia #28 1 year ago

    I call for a new score, Halo/10.

    Common Sense Prevails! :)

Roll on next week, midnight launch in Bristol here I come! :)
  • darkmorgado #30 1 year ago

Can we please ban the phrase "Air Jordan" on this site? Would stop these spamming c*nts stone dead.
  • Al_Swearengen #31 1 year ago

Aren't these credits used for cosmetic updates to one's armour? If so then how will resetting the credit level the playing field.
If Reach used a progression system like MW2 or BC2 where you are actually unlocking new weapons and genuine upgrades then I could understand the need to reset everyone. As it stands I see no sense in Bungie doing this.

Ban the people who downloaded a bootleg copy, but there's no need to be d*cks to those who have obtained the game through legitimate means.
  • Spydy #32 1 year ago

    @darkmorgado

Yeah, I thought so. I'm not a huge HALO fan to be honest, and I'm lost when it comes to the story...but I kind of got the whole reason behind the popularity after completing Reach. It's just fun from start to finish with only very small sections within certain missions that grind.

ugh! so many good games will be released on xbox this year. Need to save money fast, to buy xbox replacing my old one (rrod a year ago).

Is any of you who use JASPER got rrod? i hope its already safe.
im planning to get the X360 S but it still not out on my country, so my best bet is JASPER.

    btw, now microsoft become softer?
isnt usually they just do "ban wave" to those who play early?
