A new PSP game is coming out

Ace Combat Joint Assault gone gold.

Sony's PSP is getting a new game, and it's called Ace Combat Joint Assault.

It launches on 24th September for the PlayStation Portable and PSPgo, and has gone gold.

Ace Combat's got 40 "state of the art aircraft, fast-paced dogfights, fantastic new visuals, real-world locations and the most robust multiplayer options seen yet from the series".

Competitive and team-based multiplayer works through the PSP's ad hoc or infrastructure modes. You can play with up to three friends in campaign mode, or eight can dogfight each other in competitive multiplayer.

Joint Assault is developer Project Aces' second attempt on PSP after Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception in 2006.

You mean people still develop for this thing? Wow.
I've not bought anything for it since Disgaea 2 was ported. You don't need another game once you own that.

There are actually good PSP games coming out all the time. Valkyria Chronicles II came out last friday. I know it's an easy target to kick the PSP for being a dead platform but it's simply not the case.

In fact, If EG think the PSP market is a barren wasteland, why do they give it higher profile that the iPhone in he left hand menu :).

I like any console that has good games and enjoy lots of games on the PSP

I do however wish they would lower the price of the hardware as mine broke and would happily buy another.

Not with the current price tag though.

With this in the works, a new God of War and Kingdom Hearts on the horizon and Valkyria Chronicles II just out the PSP is hardly a dead system.

I'd have been more surprised if a new DS game which wasn't about abusing animals or wiping your arse was out. PSP looks to have had a pretty good year by comparison.

So that horrible ad campaign with that annoying little kid presented at E3 didn't kick in yet?

    Great headline, cheers! :D

I am afraid that Arsewipe: Beastiality Edition has shifted to become Kinect and Move exclusive.

It's sad to see the PSP so neglected. On the other hand if you ignore the vast heaps of shovelware the DS isn't doing much better either. Piracy has effectively killed both platforms.

    @drxym

The flipside of having so much shovelware on the DS is that a lot more experimental stuff tends to get released.

With a neglected platform, people won't release for it unless it's a "safe" game.

Does "gone gold" translate as "released yonks ago in Japan, and Tuesday past in the US" now ?

    FFS

It's a multilingual release (JP, ENG, FR, DEU etc), so all they needed were the UMD stickers and case sleeves. It went "gold" quite some time back.

    Do keep up.

I agree of course that piracy is so easy on PSP that its dead. But its no harder than on the Wii so how come that is doing OK and tbh that has far less decent games than the PSP - pirated or not.

My uneducated theory is that the PSP tries so hard to be a home console in the hand rather than what it should be which is a hand-held for those 5 minute loo trips, 20 minutes waits for a hair-cut, 45 minute waits for a flight etc.

If it was priced as a convenience travel device (£99) and the games were priced to go (£19 or less) then it would be far better - whereas at the minute its competing with the PS3 and X360 in price and games - and tbh it doesn't stand a chance.

Those idiots claiming the PSP2 needs two thumb sticks are bonkers. Thats making it compete only even more as a console - its not a portable console, its a hand-held games device. A portable console is the PS3 slim in a kit bag you take to your mates. Rant over.

The Wii is a mass-market console, selling primarily to families and the "average consumer", who won't have the technical knowledge to circumvent it. The PSP is a "high-tech" portable handheld system, primarily owned by hardcore gamers and has the power to run a massive back-library of PS1 games while you're on the daily commute (well, not today thanks to those bastard tube drivers - thanks for cancelling my trip to London, you c*nts).

I don't understand the piss-take headline - there've been plenty of PSP releases recently, and more coming soon, and many of which are high-profile too: MGS, Valkyria Chronicles, new Yakuza (although a Western release for that is still in question) and so on.

Sony seem to be making a decent concerted effort with the platform recently.

Surely it can't be a case of EG baiting again...? Oh wait.

    ^

Because the controls are broken for 3D games, and the online play is useless.

Ace Combat was released in Japan ages ago, so the title or article does not befit the game, Eurogamer. Also, there are several other awesome games coming out in Japan for the PSP, where it is a much bigger market than in the US or Europe. Personally, I can't fucking wait for Yakuza Kurohyou & the Third Birthday.

Funny that, because I paid £100 for my PSP3000 (brand new, no bundled software) and have loads of games for it that cost less than £4, let alone £19.
I guess thats why I use the damn thing so much.
It does everything you want it to, Sony are just a bit shit at telling people :(

Eurogamer News: "A new PSP game is coming out"

Expect it to be brought. Copied. And on the Internet within an hour of it's release.

Shame really. PSP isn't a bad handheld really, it just lacks support because of the security issues etc.
  • MDL199 #24 1 year ago

    banjo 21 - I couldn't disagree more!

The reason I bought a PSP is because I wanted to be able to play console quality games when I was unable or unwilling to sit in front of a big tv.

If you want shallow, fun for 5 minutes games then you'd buy a DS - I can't stand those games!

My PSP has given me hours of fun while at work on my security job and I often play it just laying on my bed when I wanna relax.

I love the PSP but it has to be said the lack of a 2nd analogue stick has prevented the system from having any great first person shooters and with that genre being so popular that's a great shame.

The US version is already out there.
The EU version will only be released for completeness sake...
