Extra MAG character slots for 99 cents

Available from today.

Zipper Interactive has updated multiplayer shooter MAG so that it's possible to subscribe to two additional character slots for $0.99 each.

For that fee "players can select the extra character they want to unlock and create a brand new persona", according to the developer (thanks VG247).

"These supplementary character subscriptions will last for 30 days from the day they've been purchased, but don't fret if you decide not to renew one or both of them immediately. Once your extra characters have been created, they reside safely dormant on the MAG server until activated for subscription once again."

Apparently the slots should be made available as part of today's regular PlayStation Store update, although it's not immediately clear if that refers to Europe too. Last week saw the introduction of the MAG "Persistent Beta" client, which allows players to test out unreleased features on beta servers before they're rolled out into the full game.

Check out our MAG review if you haven't already.

how about some coverage of the new beta.

The extra slots were already in the game yesterday. Not sure if they will be up on the store today but I would assume so.
I'm not going to get this though. I'd probably pay a one off fee for the slots but I'm not paying monthly.

Charging extra for save slots? Am I dreaming? Ambassador, you are spoiling us...

Personally I'm happy with one slot, but I hope others pay, because someone has to keep the dedicated servers going.

I think that a better way to raise money for this game post launch, would have been to give the new game modes and maps for free, but nickle-and-dime people on personalizing their character. There are a lot of people who are really into this game, and would no doubt love to drop money on new skins and weapons or whatever, and then the rest of us would have some company in our Interdiction queue...

I have not been able to get into the new beta tester yet?
I think they should just give three slots as standard,
I am so used to the one slot now, I do not think I have time for three ;)

OK, paying for extra permanent save slots... I don't like much. But for a nominal fee, I suppose I could let that go.

But paying to rent extra save slots?

    Fuck. Right. Off.

How about some coverage of the new beta with the Move. ;)

    jonbwfc - 100% agree.

Beta is terrible for me. Distorted sound during the countdown timer, not joining a group properly. I'm sticking to the retail game for now. Escalation really needs leadership to organise your platoon and give objectives, shame I have yet to see any as SVER.

The game is dying on its arse due to the way it's been handled - there's less than a hundred people playing Interdiction of an evening and I paid £8.99 for that, so they can stick their leased character save slots.

I've paid for and played Zipper games for over a decade, but this has to be the most pathetic thing I've ever seen them do. Right now I'm totally off the idea of SOCOM 4 knowing that they've got the nerve to pull this shit.

If MAG was subscription based right from the get-go then that'd be fine; I'd probably pay £2.99 per month for it, but I'm bollocksed if I'm paying £40 for a game and then being skimmed for drop-dead-obvious functionality that should have been on the disk from day one.

@icematt It's a beta there are gonna be issues get over it, that's why they are getting us to test it. So they can make sure everything is working as it should on release
