Eurogamer.net Podcast #34

Mafia II! Dragon Quest IX! With special guest Leo Tan from Capcom.

We've had Leo Tan from Capcom on the podcast before, but when he immediately asked to be on it again and we had no one else booked, it was an offer we couldn't refuse.

Leo joins host Tom Bramwell and new GamesIndustry.biz staff writer Dan Pearson to discuss the issues of the week - or at least the two-day period that elapsed between podcast recordings thanks to an inconvenient bank holiday.

That means we get stuck into the controversy around Eurogamer's 4/10 Mafia II review, while Leo harks us back to Dragon Quest IX and Dan bangs on about non-GAAP reporting methods or whatever nonsense he does now.

Stream the Eurogamer.net Podcast:

Elsewhere in the "news", we talk about Final Fantasy XIV's cap on XP and skill point earnings, and Kazunori Yamauchi's response to some mad Italians who don't want their horseracing flags to appear in Gran Turismo 5.

Plus we make room for the man who is trying to finish Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer without killing anybody.

Later on we also talk to Leo - current Capcom PR man, but a veteran of Activision and elsewhere - about the current state of games PR, people's expectations of and perspectives on it, and other stuff like that.

Background reading!

The Eurogamer.net Podcast goes out every Tuesday at 3pm. Next week we'll try not to forget about Forum Affairs!

I also get an error when trying to download it, and it won't stream for me either. Frustrating!

Same here. Really looking forward to hearing this one too. Looks like it's got all the hallmarks of a good listen too.

(By the way, videos weren't loading properly for me earlier either, if that helps the tech guys, Mac/Camino here)

We're experiencing some technical problems with our hosting at the minute, I'm afraid, which isn't affecting all of the site, but has stymied some aspects. Unfortunately serving the podcast as a download is one of those aspects. We're working on getting everything back to normal as quickly as possible, but it's really out of hands for the time being!

Sorry. And the podcast is definitely worth the wait. Or my bits are, at least.

Has he completed the special ops?

Hope the audio quality has been improved this week, looking forward to the random sounds of seagulls, dustbin men and general background noise.

Eventually got it to work. Excellent discussion this week. I'm Scottish and I can't quite place Leo Tan's accent. He sort of sounds like a more excitable Ewan McGregor. I have a job interview tomorrow, and I'm thinking about putting this podcast onto my ipod, so that the last thing that I hear before being barraged with questions from three scary-looking suits is Leo's boundless enthusiasm and boyish charm.

ref the horse thing in Italy, you can see it on the film James Bond Quantum of Solace. If you want to see what all the fuss is about.

Best podcast you've done so far, mainly due to Leo Tan. He's an interesting character that I would love to listen to each week. Sign him up just to do the podcast every week.

Best podcast so far, by miles.

As a Christmas pressie to us listeners, the line up for the Christmas podcast should be The two Toms, Dan, Leo Tan and last but by no means least Charles Cecil.

Charles Cecil and Leo Tan on the same podcast would be brilliant.

@Mr.DNA: I always think that Leo sounds like Billy Boyd the actor, he's from Glasgow so I'd put Leo being from around there as well.

I'm not sure if the guys were just being facetious or not, but Folding@Home is still on the PS3 - it wasn't removed when OtherOS was, as they seemed to think. Some of them, anyway.

Leo's originally from North Ayrshire. He was a few years above me at school. I may even have touched him once.
  • X201 #16 1 year ago

I'd call that close enough for a win \o/

"Charles Cecil and Leo Tan on the same podcast would be brilliant. "

    Indeed. With more daft wigs.

No, no wigs. In fact no Ellie.

Leo Tan is great, the very opposite of a vacuous PR drone, in fact. But I'd like to point something out to you, Leo. The reason we hang on what developers, designers and directors say, and ignore what their PRs say, is because the developers, designers and directors have actual talents and skills. Yes, they may be as invested in the success of their product as their PRs are, but they actually create things. Creating 9/10 scores for shoddy games is not a skill. Cheers mate!
