FF Versus XIII may not make next year

"We can't commit ourselves to 2011."

Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase has refused to confirm that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will see release next year.

"We have no release date information to update. Unfortunately we can't say anything about that. We can't commit ourselves to 2011 either," Kitase told Gaming Union (thanks, VG247).

Little is known about the PS3-exclusive action-RPG, despite the fact that it was first announced in 2006 alongside sister title Final Fantasy XIII. It's being directed by Tetsuya Nomura, character designer of FFXII and director of the Kingdom Hearts games.

If it's anything like FF13 they can shelve it for all I care.

final fantasy 13 and FF13 versus are taking too much time to develop, I suspect production / game design problems...(for example FF13 was designed for ps2 before ts development shifted to ps3, this was a waste of time for its developers)

That's the thing, perhaps it will NOT be like FF13.

    In any case: Ouch!

The fact that the games sell millions guaranteed irrespective of the end product probably has something to do with this. With Final Fantasy XIII they seem to have been working without any sort of overall plan for the finished article which resulted in a lot of time wasted.

Stories about there being enough left over assets to make another Final Fantasy XIII sounds horrendously wasteful and speaks of terrible project management. I'm not even sure why these games are getting announced so early when all they seemed to be in 2006 was a name with perhaps a few cutscenes but no game or overall plan for the end product.

After XIII I really don't give a crap anymore.

I want a Dragonquest on my PS3, wipes the floor with FF at this point.

It's such a shame this isn't being released on the Xbox 360. I played Final Fantasy XIII and absolutely loved it, it just doesn't seem to make much sense to have this as a PS3 exclusive. Didn't XIII sell over a million on the 360? I honestly can't see Square Enix ignoring those numbers.

And I honestly don't care if I get negged by fanboys. This whole "my console has a game you don't have hah!" business is ridiculous. I was glad when I learnt Mass Effect 2 was going to the PS3 since more people would be able to enjoy a fantastic game, and I honestly wouldn't care if Halo or Gears of War went over to "rival" consoles.

Anyway, I digress. I can only hope that Square Enix will do an E3 '09 and announce that Versus XIII will be on the 360 too. Playing a huge RPG at a friend's house isn't really a viable option.

1 shit game is hardly a trend and the last kingdom hearts game I played was pretty awesome. When a brand has so many lead possible directors it goes a bit like a tv series with lots of writers, the consistency changes, but that doesn't mean that there won't be any good episodes, just that you may have to sit through some crap while waiting for them.

The last games he directed were the portable Kingdom Hearts games, despite having a psp I've only played the DS one. Admittedly I haven't had a chance to sink my teeth into it but it seemed pretty decent. Surely it would be more fitting to judge him on these, than a game that he only designed characters for.

Final Fantasy is a dead franchise to me now. I guess it helps that they have been great at some point in history so people won't let go.

To me, only the PS1 FF games were worthy. Where it wasnt all about graphics or achievements but all about the storyline and how involved it made you feel.

Actually the achievements/trophies were one of the only things I did like about FF13, the way they unlocked wallpapers for the ps3...that was a nice touch. I dunno, I'm not ready to write this off yet, but so far they haven't actually shown us anything.
