It's out next year, says Insomniac.

Sony has revealed that a third instalment in the PS3-exclusive Resistance series is on the way.

The announcement was made during the platform holder's gamescom conference, as you'll know if you followed our live blog of the event.

A trailer showed trains filled with dirty, miserable-looking passengers, heading down bloody railroad tracks through ruined landscapes. Also: aliens.

Sony didn't say when the game would be out. However, a message on Insomniac Games' Twitter page reveals that Resistance 3 is "coming to PS3 in 2011".

Awesome news. Hopefully like Resistance 2, it will do away with load screens which plagued the first game.

I wonder what Insomniac have instore for the online portion of the game. Maybe they will borrow Zipper's netcode and have 128 player battles and or larger than 8 player co-op modes.

Simply adding more players to a map won't friggen improve the quality of the game. The 8-player online co-op in R2 sucked assss.

Hopefully the game will be more like Resistance 1 and not 2. Quite liked the first but the second has left me extremely underwhelmed.

@Retroid, I agree, R1 was alright, if a little retro, but I really didnt like R2... in fact its only second to my hate of MW2... I just didnt take to it at all.

Really liked that trailer but it tells us sod all about the game. It would be a bit bizarre if they were going L4D as that would suggest they really don't know what to do with the series. It's a shame because the first game essentially got it right but needed a bit more polish and fine tuning, rather than just being chucked away which is what happened with R2.

I hope the committee that they designed the second game for have been replaced with people who like games.

They literally took everything good about the first one and made it worse.
