PS3s with larger HDDs in September

160GB and 320GB plus Move.

Sony has announced that it will be making two new models of PS3 with larger hard disks available from 15th September.

There will be a 320GB machine bundled with a PlayStation Move motion controller kit for £284.99 / €349. A 160GB machine will be sold for £249.99 / €299 and "gradually replace" stock of the current 120GB model, which costs the same.

The announcement was made at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's gamescom press conference in Cologne, Germany.

SCEE boss Andrew House said the two new models would help the PS3 "maintain leadership". Xbox 360 currently ships with a 250GB hard drive for £199.99.

House also revealed that PS3 sales had reached 38 million, with 16 million of those in Europe.

He said that last year's gamescom conference, when the PS3 Slim was announced, was "pivotal" and "the instant PS3 sprang to life".

Yep - they learned decent marketing techniques again too. I can see myself buying loads of shooters on PS3 now with the Move support.

If Mass Effect supports it, then I'll grab that too.

Wait a minute, didn't I just read that somewhere....?
  • dupplawt #3 2 years ago

    Dammit... and I just bought a 250gb PS3 w/ 2 games for £284.99!
  • Arwin #4 2 years ago

You mean 320GB Move bundle? :)
  • bad09 #5 2 years ago

Meh, I already upped my HDD (best thing about the PS design quite frankly).....still only a media player though, sorry Sony..

What was it that Sony said about MS having 2 SKUs in 2005? Oh yes, that it was stupid because it confused the consumer.

How many SKUs do these two make now?
  • CaptainKid #7 2 years ago

You can swap it with a 2.5 inch laptop HD.
Don't know the specifics or what brands to use.

    @ Quak

It makes 2 Sku's!! 160gb and 320gb...the other ones will get phased out

35 quid extra for double the HD and Move? Something not quite right there.... Not quite sure what though! I think I want a cheaper 160, and a corresponding Move bundle at the 250 mark.

Should of been 160gb and Move for £250.
  • the_sas_man #12 2 years ago

I wish both Microsoft and Sony would stop developing these new SKU's and instead invest the millions$ into dropping the price of the current SKU's!

I have an Xbox and also want a PS3 - but it's still pricing me out and I suspect its the same for many others!

So Europe got 16 of 38 million. That's a pretty big market then, so why is it that EU PSN is so bad?

I'm especially disappointed in the selection of PSOne Classics, which is much larger in the other PSN stores. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was released in US PSN 3+ years ago, but we still don't have it! Why not?

Other games I would love to see on PSN are Suikoden, Suikoden II, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Wild Arms.

And Chrono Cross, but seeing it was never released in Europe back during the PS1 days, I figure the chances of that ever happening is zero. Sucks.

Wonder if any of these SKU's will manage to outsell the £165 Wii?
  • Zaiz #15 2 years ago

I'm going to be physically pained if people by the new SKU, after already owning a fat and a slim. I mean honest to goodness, some people are crazy and this move is capitalizing on that. I also bet some of the people who whine that PCs need upgrading every year to be competitive will also be buying a new PS3 without a hint of irony.

Aka Sony is being a money grubbing retard like the rest of the games industry.
  • TheApologist #16 2 years ago

    @Alestes

Absolutely - Suikoden games on there would be amazing
  • carrotcake #17 2 years ago

To be fair I don't think 2 different skus would confuse anybody except a dumb minority. It's just the same console with different size storage... kinda like getting a choice of 16 GB or 32 GB memory card with a digital camera. And wow, is the cheapest PS3 sku still £250? The PS3 generation has a lot of years left, there could be another 50 million people who aren't buying one till it hits £150.

Aka Sony is being a money grubbing retard like the rest of the games industry.

@Zaiz - what the hell are you talking about?

Let me set some things up for you, so you can educate yourself alittle:

    1. Releasing a new SKU is the norm, why because it is cheaper to release a unit with a bigger hard disk because the smaller disks are usually no longer available. User wins by getting console for same price with larger hard disk (or in many cases gets to pick up the SKU with smaller hard disk cheaper as the price is reduced to clear).
    2. You do know that up until recently Sony were taking a loss (hit) on every single PS3 sold. Yes thats great money grabbing technique. In fact at one point Sony were losing hundreds of dollars per unit... now perhaps you dont understand english very well and understand the term money grabbing?
  • callum9999 #19 2 years ago

"Invest the millions"? You really think they have spent millions on just replacing a hard drive - which probably costs about the same as the old smaller ones anyway.
  • Collymilad #20 2 years ago

Seriously, what are people putting on their hard drives?

Haven't dropped below 55Gb on my 120Gb slim yet, and there's quite a few DL games on there.

    @makeamazing

Most hardware manufacturers make a loss on it, they make the money back from software. So yeah, it's not like they don't have their wallets in mind, but then they are a business.

  • swissorc #22 2 years ago

can someone tell me why people go out and buy bigger and bigger hard drive versions of the same console when you can just up rate it yourself to 1 tb and be done with it.
  • jefranklin18 #23 2 years ago

These replacement SKUs are probably brought about the lack of availability of the smaller hard disks, or the additional costs of the larger size of being marginal. Either way the user benefits.
  • KayJay #24 2 years ago

    @swissorc
Well I expect those who already have a PS3 wont go out and buy one. But the people who havent got one should be pleased...
Is it that difficult to understand?
