Quake Live subscriptions revealed

"Enhance" free-to-play experience.

id Software has unveiled two ways to pay to "enhance" the free-to-play version of first-person shooter Quake.

Quake Live, which can be played in a web browser, now has two premium subscriptions.

The Premium Subscription, which costs £1.59 / €1.99 per month, grants access to 20 premium only maps, the Freeze Tag game mode, premium level awards, a custom Quake Live profile wallpaper, match statistics stored for six months and allows you to create your own clan and join up to five others.

The Pro Subscription, which costs £3.18 / €3.99 per month, includes all the Premium gubbins and grants players the ability to start their own game server, invite three friends with Standard membership to play in any Premium level map, gives you exclusive pro awards, lets you create your own clan and join up to ten others and match statistics stored for 12 months.

What is Quake Live? Jim Rossignol went hands-on for Eurogamer last year and found out.

    It's still quite popular, and rightly so :-) Not too fond of the subscriptions myself either, but I'm dying to play Freeze Tag again (which is part of the premium subscription) so I might actually go and pay that €2 per month.

    Somethings makes me feel terribly uncomfortable paying for something based on tech that's 10 years old, even I do adore it.

    Its a couple of quid a month, probably took a while to develop and they give you tons of stuff for the sub fee. Oh and their not charging for the game thats already there, this is for extra functions.

    Get a grip people, you think people work for free?

    I subscribed, it's certainly worth it if you play it :)

    £15 for a year, not really that bad now is it.

    Nobody is forcing you to pay for the Premium Sub. If you're happy enough playing for free, then carry on.

    Subscriptions = fail.

    I agree with plusmlook above, I was "done" with Q3 ten years ago at point 2 in his list. Put in plenty of hours in the day, had a brief 'nostalgia' go when Quake Live released; but don't need to play it any more.

    @Watkins
    Quake 3 is not the same as Quake Live. Quake Live has better netcode and very slightly bumped up visuals. It has integrated support for many new features which are coming with the new subscription model and that to many Quake fans validates the small price they can pay. It's optional and not something forced apon you. The game is competitive in Nature because of it's balanced and frantic gameplay. Nothing these days can match the intensity of Quake 3 and the Unreal series.

    lol... i dont even play it for free...

    I was never that into Quake in the first place and with a subscription I won't even bother.

    I tried to play this. After all the painful signup and training modes, I got kicked repeatedly with Punkbuster, for what I do not know. Never managed to log onto a single game. Lame.

    Subscriptions = fail.

    Good point. They'll never catch on.

    I play Quake Live all the time, but then only played the demo of Arena. Frankly, I love it. Paying some 20 quids a year for even more goodness is wel worth it in my eyes, and as said, if you don't want to, don't. There's still some 40 other maps to play for free.
