Der_tolle_Emil: I really doubt Halo would live up to anything right now. It was an excellent game in it's day, but we're quite a few years and a ton of advancement on now. Expectations have changed.

@Psychotext: I totally agree. I sometimes hate myself for not playing games when they are released because a few years later it is so much more difficult to enjoy them. I am having a nice time with Halo nevertheless. I still wonder about those little aliens that sound like the smurfs though. To sum it up: Halo is (too) generic to really stand out in my opinion. I cannot help but compare it to Unreal. That game had an incredible athmosphere I hoped Halo could deliver too, sadly, it cannot. At least the shooting is quite fun because of the very good AI.

Exclusive = exclusive to Microsoft systems, i.e. Xbox and Windows
Sega released Sonic games on the Megadrive, Master System and Game Gear but it was still their exclusive franchise

@Chupachups - MS do not own PC's in the same way they own the Xbox or the way Sony own PS3. MS exclusive is a BS term imo whe relaing to PC games. After all they don't get revenue from all PC games.

I'm shocked, you mentioned SSX Tricky but left out SSX3, the vastly superior sequel that's incidentally one of my favourite games ever (Even if it's EA).
SSX On Tour can go sulk in a corner, it wasn't nearly as great. |

King Kong? I'll admit I played to the end but it was for the love of Kong not the gameplay that got me there.
What about Crimson Skies? And no Star Wars Battlefront? I'll forgive because Panzer Orta got a mention. |

Since the Wii will be fully backwards compatible an article with the best cube games might be a good idea. It is just that cube games are very hard to get by these days, while the shelves are stuffed with original xbox games.

Der_tolle_Emil: Your comment about the music makes me wonder if something is a bit fooked about your copy of Halo... One of the genuine high points of the game for me was Marty O'Donnell's absolutely amazing score for the game.
I can seeh how rubbish voices would ruin it to some extent as well, since the voice acting of Cortana and your squadmates is a really key element of the atmosphere. I played through Halo at one point in Japanese (don't ask - I wanted to play it, all I had access to was a second hand Japanese copy...) and the voice acting was A Bit Rubbish, surprisingly - which kinda robbed a lot of the atmosphere. |

The music in Halo is excellent - in fact I usually find music much more important than graphics (those two behind gameplay of course). That's why I wished there was more in Halo. Take for example the level where you have to find the cartograph (Level3?), the big island. There is no music playing at all. There are subtle athmospheric sounds (which I like) when entering the interior but outside it is just quiet.

I don't mean to start a flame war or anything, but reading this list just shows me how much I didn't miss by not owning an Xbox. Particularly given that the best of the 12 (Halo 1, KOTOR, Half-life 2, Riddick, Morrowind) are available on the PC anyway...
Compare this to a "12 best of the PS2" or "12 best of the Gamecube" (for which you can also exclude PC-also titles and still make great lists) and surely even the most ardent fanboi would have to agree that the Xbox was the least compelling console of the last generation - in terms of software. |
