We're giving them away. Today!

Eurogamer and Funcom are teaming up for a very special giveaway this week: 1000 free, digital download copies of Funcom's fantasy MMO for PC, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.

To be clear, these are not free trials, these are fully paid-up copies of the game, complete with the usual 30 days' free subscription.

They'll be distributed later today, Friday 10th July, on a first-come, first-served basis. You'll need a Eurogamers account to claim one, so if you want to save yourself some time and get ahead of the pack, register now. No strings, it's free!

Funcom is proud of the work it's done to improve Age of Conan in the year-and-a-bit since its release, so it has decided to share the fruits of its labour with 1000 lucky Eurogamer readers. We recently revisited the game and had to agree, calling it "Conan's Second Coming".

Since then, Funcom has continued to overhaul Age of Conan with a new RPG system and more in last month's game-changing Update 5.

I downloaded the trial of this, and it seems technicality better than Wow, but bloody wow dragged me back after three years off. Wow its a grindfest, but the game just seems to work better, and I don't know why. I tryed LOTR online too, but again.. not too sure of that one. Not going near Eve online again, that just too much like hard work and another job.

Is Funcom getting desperate or something? NEXT WEEK: Funcom Giving 20,000 Free Copies of Age of Conan!! As a distributer, Eidos should just jump the leaking ship. How much of a slice does Eidos even get from the pie?

So if I use the 7 day trial key I got from the last giveaway, then add this full key afterward, I'll get over a month? That's nice, certainly more than enough to see if I like it. Though the client torrent I've been at for days is a bit on the slow side, and http versions always crash on me.

And what about us early adopters who got an unfinished mess of a game? They should give us 90 days for free rather than try to win over new subs who'll no doubt be put off by the negative word of mouth us early adopters still generate. Maybe if they showed us how much it's improved, the public perception will shift.

bought the special edition of this - nice picture of a naked female barbarian is all I have to remember this by - it was so rubbish and laggy - never going back to it. Also stopped playing WAR - very few people on the servers. Just gone back to LOTR online - the best one out there at the mo (IMO).

Not played it for a wee while (not played any mmo for a couple of months though)

For disgruntled early adopters - The game is poles apart from the barrel of bugs that it was at release. It works, it's fun, it has content, it is not the same game. This was the case even before the 1.05 update.

They should really have something in place where if you have an account that hasn't logged in in over 6 months you get 30 days 'trial' though.

Yeah, Funcom are grateful to all those "AoC shows promise" reviews that ignored the issues raised by beta testers that the game practically ceased to exist past the opening levels. Without those reviews they wouldn't have the cash to fix the game so it can be reviewed again a year later. Sadly for Funcom the people who fell for it the first time aren't going to part with their cash the second time.

If only the world of Conan didn't feel like small, cramped zones with narrow corridors in them.. and constant loading screens as you wander around from zone to zone.

That's one of the biggest draws of WoW for me, the seamless, believable world.

One game worked as advertised from the start, has frequent updates, a healthy subscriber base and developers that people trust. The other is Age of Conan.

Just started up WoW for the first time in a year. I have about a trillion items which I've forgotten the use of :/ really can't see why people call the game shallow!

WoW and UO are the only two MMOs I've played seriously. A quick stint on Planetside years ago too come to think of it. I find grinding strangely therapeutic. Probably why I like JRPGs...

I bought this from Steam for �8.99 + one month free a couple of months ago.

I have to say that if you have a semi-decent p.c (dual-core and above) and a decent graphics card, then, it is a joy to behold. There was quite a few peeps around as well, which was a nice surprise.

Well I do play WoW for 3 or so years and its a great game but had lots of burnouts over the years! I always was interested in Age of Conan and did play the free try out and want more but the try out was really limited love to win one of that copies to see of I finally found a true 2nd mmo!!

I finally did the sensible thing and abandoned the torrent that was at 18.9% after 3 days and settled for an HTTP download. Left it overnight, and now I'm really to try this out

I do like the concept, I'll judge myself soon enough.

The beta client was 26 gigs so I'd say that size or more. The Gamestop near me were offering copies of this or Warhammer Online free when you purchased any new game on Friday. I was going to get this (free = always a good price) but they had ran out of copies, still might be worth checking if you have a Gamestop near you, that is.

Mind you, I'd expect about 10+ gigs of patches after installing.

Think the Client is about 15-16 gig now. It was 24 gig last time i tried it about 4 months ago. Im pretty sure its due to installing audio for all languages that it was such a monstrous size.

It's worth giving a shot in my opinion.

There is always a chance you won't like something about it and with an MMO what you dislike about a game is always amplified considering if you have disliked something about a game from the first hour your going to really hate it 200 hours later.

On the other hand with a normal game you would only have to put up with it for several hours.

AoC is bound not to appeal to some people but I think it has potential as a game and it plays a lot better now.

I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt and give it a shot.

Temporarily closing down trial registrations

As we are giving former Age of Conan players the chance to come back and check the game out for free through a re-evaluation offer, we are temporarily closing down new free trial registrations.

This is being done to ensure that the returning players are met with the best experience possible with Age of Conan. The pausing of new trial registrations does not affect existing trial players, and buddy invites will still be working. Already existing trial keys are still working and can be used to create a new trial account. No date has been set for when trial registrations will re-open, but rest assured that we are looking forward to inviting trial players back to Hyboria.

I'm telling you, the keys will be given according to how many posts you have. So, a bigger postcount means bigger chances to get a key. So, GO ASAP on the forums and start posting about giveaway. Begging for a key also helps, if you beg you gain post count +10 each time. Even more, posting a video with you begging for a key will guarantee you succes.

I bet if EG put in big block letters how to actally get a key and asking 'can i have a key' in the comments section classes as spam and bans the account from getting one people would still do it.

Maybe my english is not as good as I would like, but in the article I found this sentence:

"They'll be distributed later today, Friday 10th July, on a first-come, first-served basis"

That "later today" means that the keys will be available in the evening or even later?

I'm under no illusions that i'l get the game....i've waited for loads of offers before only end up with nothing....my favourite of course was the Fable Pub Games codes on Lionhead waiting for ages for the codes to appear and then typing them all in to find they had all already been used by other people....this went on for days and days and days....oh the fun!!!

As I said in the original ad, key sites for the AOC will be distributed Friday. Not at first, but during the day tomorrow. If other giveaway sites I was able to offer a range smaller for AOC there is no "inside info". So at some time during the day today, colleagues at Eurogamer.net will begin "the division". To claim one of the games can be used and the Eurogamer.ro. Start will be announced on site Eurogamer.net. Here or directly on the main page. I really do not understand where that idea came to start 00:00 (UK or Romania), always giveaway sites took place during the day.

lame that I cant apply the key to my trial account. I guess 'cause the trial key I got from mmorpg.com is considered a "US trial" which means I cant apply the "Europe" free game key to that account. So I wont be able to use my level 20 toon from before, nor have the bonus items that I have on that account.

Well I guess this is what you have to do, found this information at Funcom.

Once the product has been purchased (or entered the key at https://register.age ofconan.com/) you will find the URL for your download at the top of your Account Page on https://register.age ofconan.com/ Heads will Roll!
